I've just been trying once again to get the first two thief games to work on my (relatively new, running Windows 7) PC. I recall last time I tried I was unable to get Thief 1 to work at all, but did achieve complete success with thief 2.
This time (I haven't tried thief 2 yet), I have managed to get thief 1 to work. Mostly. There are two issues:
1) (predictably) The movies don't run at all. I've tried all the suggested fixes in the the sticky thread on this forum, as well as a few others, and nothing seems to work.
2) There's a weird display bug in the Options menu, that I've found no references to in any threads. Some buttons disappear altogether, others are in bizarre places. "Customize Controls" is particularly odd, with the "Bind" button being almost invisible- you can see only the bottom 20% of it, the scroll arrows not lining up, and other strange anomalies. It still works, but it's a bit of a headache to change anything.
I'm using DDFix, of course. I'm actually not entirely sure whether I've got Thief Gold or the original, and don't know how to tell- the CD case just says "Thief", but I don't know whether that's definitive. I downloaded both fixed-exes, and they both seem to work.
Any ideas?

At the very least, the people around here usually like to know what graphics card/drivers you are using.

Right-click on the .exe and look at properties and the information under the version tab.
If it's Thief Gold then perhaps (

There is a more up-to-date WIP FAQ (

1. If you open a movie from the game in media player does it play? Make sure you are running the game in administrator mode. Also what location did you install the game to? (avoid installing to any variation of C:\Program Files)
2. Have you changed any Windows display settings away from the default setting like the option to make menus appear larger? (if so, set it back to default and see if that solves the problem) What version of ddfix are you using?
