-The presenter really had no idea what ghosting was. Doh. "You mean like walking through walls? That would be kind of weird." Good lord.
I think he was attempting a joke.
Renault on 30/9/2013 at 02:22
He's definitely not joking - check it out right at 31:00, he never smiles or laughs or anything, he has to wait for the guy in the audience to explain ghosting to him.

I had some comments, but it looks like they were all made by others in this thread.
What interested me was that this was the first time that I'm aware of that they showed the in-game map of one of the levels. I grabbed a screen from the video and cleaned it up a little (not very well, I suck at Photoshop):

Honestly, level design wise this doesn't look too bad. Not nearly as bad as what I'd expect. It looks a little small especially with how fast you move in this game. It would be nice if the rooms were more interconnected, but it's got a nice looping hallway that everything branches off of. I was totally expecting a Bioshock style straight line with a line of siderooms that you explore and backtrack out of. Not bad.

I watched this earlier today. Glad you posted it jay.
@Brethren and Starker: He knew what it was once the guy started explaining it. My guess is he's never heard the term "ghosting" before. That is, he understands the concept, just wasn't familiar with the term. If that's the case, that's completely fair. After all, fans came up with the term at least in relation to the Thief series, right? Having said all that, since it does seem he was being serious it's a bit funny that he'd actually think the guy in the audience was suggesting such a thing, because it's quite ridiculous.

Starting at 20:45, you will witness Garrett moving silently over tile. He is moving across tile flooring at a pace that in Dark Project would have alerted every guard within earshot! Sound is so crucial to the game play in Thief, and here it is reduced to rubble. He makes no sound walking on tile regardless of swoop/focus.
Yeah, this honestly bugged me too. What's even more frown worthy (and is sending mixed signals as well so I don't know what to believe) is that in the Q&A session, someone asks about Garrett's footsteps on different surfaces causing a reaction out of guards and the guy on stage said there would be. (Not his exacts words, mind you.) As you well know his response completely contradicts what was seen in the gameplay footage.:erg:
@yxlplig:
Yeah, I noticed the map too and I'm glad they're bringing back maps as a part of the game.

Because I always like to give folk the benefit of the doubt and can't believe that someone who's spent a couple of years doing Thief 9 to 5 every day of the week hasn't come across the term 'Ghosting' in a stealth game context ~ especially when the trailer for the game you're making specifically refers to being a 'ghost' I wondered if he was just trying to prompt the audience guy into explaining what ghosting was and wasn't for the benefit of maybe other audience peoples who might have wandered in lost and expecting a talk about Fifa 14 or something.

Cringe-worthy moment #1
17:00 -- Three guards are standing around a crate. Garrett throws a bottle at a guard's head, slows down time, gets his bow out and shoots the other guard in the head just as the bottle connects and KO's the first one, and then swoops forward, grabbing the last guard and clubbing him on the head before the "370 XP Headshot" has even disappeared.
If by "cringe-worthy moment" you mean "fist-pumpingly awesome moment" then I agree! :D
Ok, so that part feels more like Far Cry 3-stealth than Thief-stealth, and the whole tone of the game feels more like Dishonored than Thief, and it looks way too easy, but hopefully that's because the level is more supposed to show of the different elements of the gameplay than be challenging.
Overall, what I'm seeing here does not look much like classic Thief, but it
does look like something I'd want to play.

34:08 - Bow upgrade!!!
Also, you can upgrade focus mode? I thought being able to see through walls, avoid traps, speed up lock-picking, slow time down and takeout multiple guards at once wasn't enough. Maybe i could have it play the whole game for me as well?! Just the ticket!

It does kinda look much more like a second class Thief knock off than an actual Thief game. That they've even called their protagonist Garrett making it that extra bit cringe-worthy.
I've watched the demo section a couple of times now - trying to think positively and give it a fair show, and it's just, well, a bit meh.
Some plus points ~ I think we've seen enough of the courtyard section to know that you can find different routes through and avoid confrontations ~ so that's a tick. (Though it's not obvious that this is fun or atmospheric or interesting or nerve wracking.)
Looking out for little pin pricks of light to reveal hidden areas is a nice touch. Or at least it was until there was a pin prick of light emanating fro a sealed coffin. Where's that light coming from EM?
Sometimes it's pretty, though other times just a bit bland.
And that's about as positive as I can muster I'm sad to say. And even those positives are half hearted. If I listed the negatives, it'd be a long list. Among them would be that this is the first time I've actually positively disliked the new voice. It never had the character of Stephen Russell's performance - but it's just devoid of interest full stop - there's no sense of knowing or sarcasm or wry wit. No sense of anything at all. And the lines are awful - At what point is the game going to be a, you know, a game if Garrett just tells you what you need to do. "That painting I'm walking past looks like you should search it and reveal a secret room". ffs.
Maybe if I was a massive fan of the stealth genre I'd be interested in a second rate stealth game just for the sake of it. But there was way more to the original Thief titles than being just another a stealth-em-up.

Indeed. In fact there was so much more to it that I'm not sure EM could even recreate that feeling if they even
tried going in that direction. It's more than just getting Russell to do the voice. You'd need the original writers, artists, and designers on board to really nail it.
I don't agree that this looks like a "second class Thief knock off". That implies that they're trying to make it like the old games and failing to do so. They're very clearly going in a new direction with this one, and in the end I think that's the best choice they could've made.

A whole lot of fan mission authors have nailed, if not the exact style of Thief, but at least something reasonably close to it. It is not rocket science, although, yeah, it requires at least a little bit of of taste.;)
