Hi guys,
I brought this up in the Sneaky patch thread, and realized pretty quickly that it seems to be a much larger problem.
In short, I experience inconsistent stuttering and lag while playing - to the point that the game is not enjoyable to play, by any means. I've seen threads which point to it being a Windows 7 problem (which I unfortunately have).
Here's an old thread where someone explains the same problem - exactly what I'm experiencing:
"Now, all goes well until microstutter raises its ugly head. It`s similar to what the OP describes - sometimes things get choppy, usually near source of light indoors. But not always. Mostly visible when strafe-circling an object, a chair for example." ((
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135645))
Unfortunately no one responded to him, and the question was posed in 2011.
Here are my specs:
- I purchased Thief 3 via Steam (so it looks like it's version 1.1)
- Windows 7
- AMD A8-3500m APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics 1.50GHz
- HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC
- 6.00 GB (5.48 GB usable)
- 64-bit operating system
I've played with all of the settings in the game, have tried installing and uninstalling the Sneaky patch, and nothing helps - even at the lowest settings, I run into really choppy visuals at certain points (they seem to be "busy" or high activity points in the game - like in the first city mission, where you come upon two people discussing robbing the Hammerites).
I'd greatly, greatly appreciate any help, as this has been a major drag so far.
Thank you.

I don't know if I can help but on the rare occasions I have experienced stuttering and severe lag in a game, running it in single-core CPU mode did the trick.
I don't know if that is even relevant here though. Does SU already make T3 run in single-core mode? No idea.

That might be more of a Windows 7 and AMD or Radeon hardware, rather than Windows 7 alone. I had Thief 3 installed on 3 different Win7 based PCs with Intel and Nvidia CPU/GPU without any problems.

Unfortunately I know very little about graphics cards and cores. I believe my computer is a quad core (I can double check, if someone wants to direct me) - is there a way (without potentially messing other things up) that I can make adjustments with my existing system specs, to get it to run?
As I mentioned, at certain points the game works just fine - it's just at certain other points it gets really heavy with stuttering and lag. The worst I've seen is actually where I stopped playing for the time being, as I couldn't enjoy playing like that - it was in the first city mission, where you come upon the two people discussing robbing the Hammerites (and you steal a map from the guy's belt). For whatever reason, it's just insanely choppy there, as it is in other parts of the game as well (certain areas near lights, etc., as described by the other user).
It'll be quite frustrating if I end up not being able to play on this computer, as I don't have another one, and had been really looking forward to continuing the Thief series. I actually just returned to gaming after about a 15 year break, and I will say that some of the compatibility problems (and/or port problems) with PC's can be incredibly frustrating.

To give the single core mode thing a try, load up Thief DS then alt-tab to the desktop and follow the Win 7 instructions for setting single core affinity here:
(

Just make sure that only one of the cores has a tick. It may turn out that this is already the case, in which case you might want to try unchecking whatever core it is and checking another one.
Worth a look anyway, and will not permanantly alter your system.

Thanks a lot, I'll try that out and report back.
Thanks for the reply. Probably a stupid question, but how do I make sure of that (that the RAM assigned to the GPU is 512 or more)?
Thanks again guys, as I really, really would like to get this game running. I feel absolutely lost not being able to play it right now.

So I unfortunately just gave this a try, testing the performance with one core selected at a time, and there was no change - the severe stuttering remained.
If someone can direct me how to make sure enough RAM is allocated I can try that as well.

My rig under Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate x64
i7 3770k 3,56 Ghz
ATI Radeon (Sapphire) HD 7870 2GB RAM DDR5, Bandwith 153.6 GB/s
8 GB RAM DDR3
Monitor resolution 1152x864
I always had severe stuttering with Thief DS. Even after a fresh install of Windows 7
The problem is the game.
I'm referring to the vanilla, standard game, the one version I played.

That's what it sounds like, unfortunately. It's like a luck of the draw sort of thing - it either works for someone's computer, or it doesn't. The frustrating thing in my case is that there are a lot of points in the game where things are working fine, without any stuttering. It seems like stuttering arises in areas where a lot is going on - the worst I've seen (and the point where I've stopped playing for that reason) is during the first city mission, when you come upon the two people discussing robbing the Hammerites (and you're supposed to steal the map from the guy's belt).
I just don't know. This sucks quite a bit. Was really looking forward to playing this game, and now I feel like I might never get the chance.
