Thief: Deadly Shadows EAX on a modern system

I've used the following guide to restore EAX in Thief 3:

and the EAX can now indeed be activated in the game's settings.

Make sure you enable Hardware Mixing and both the EAX settings:

I installed it, following the instructions. Positional audio is working great with headphones out of the box. Reverb is sort-of working. At first I was unsure if it was active, but changing the boost value in alsoft.ini between -12 and 12 definitely has an effect. It sounds weird, though, as if the reverb is cut off abruptly when the sound itself ends. Nothing like (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAzes39xsJY) this. (I always thought EAX reverb sounded too exaggerated, but this is not right either.)
