I recently bought the thief series on steam. I have encountered a glitch in both thief 1 and 2: whenever a cutscene begins to play, the following error message pops up, and the game crashes:
"ERROR:buff len of 80 exceeded by 80:
Success.avi
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\TheSte\steamapps\common\theif_2\MOVIES\
I have seen advice given, and know that I should reinstall the game. But how do I solve this problem with a steam game? Can someone walk me through, step by step, how to get around this glitch?
Thank you for your time, I'm thankful to find a forum as devoted as this one!

Have you tried verifying integrity of game cache in Steam? Have you downloaded and installed patch 1.19?

I have verified my game, multiple times. I have not downloaded the patch because it was not official, and I feared viruses.

The reason for the error is that the filename path
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\TheSte\steamapps\common\theif_2\MOVIES\ is more than 80 characters in length. Original Thief can't cope with long paths.
If you set up a new folder, say
C:\Games\Thief2\ and copy the contents of your
theif_2 folder into it that will fix the error. Do the same for Thief1, into say
C:\Games\Thief1\. (Of course, you will need to change the paths in the .cfg files and the shortcuts as well.)
The games will run better if you use (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131106) Tafferpatcher and (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134733) TFix. (The latest versions will apply the 1.19 patch recommended by AluminumHaste.)

I tried moving Thief to a new folder, but it made Steam panic and think that the file was missing or corrupted, so it wouldn't open the game. The problem would be fixed by restoring the game to its previous position. Can you tell me how to get steam to recognize the game after moving it?
Also, how do I cahnge paths in the .cfg files?

Once you install the 1.19 patch you aren't going to be running Thief from within Steam anymore as the new thief2.exe/thief.exe isn't a steam executable. Once you move your Thief installation, you will be running thief2.exe/thief.exe directly. You don't even need steam running anymore.
Also go to your new Thief location and open install.cfg and copy what's in there on this forum.
Someone can point out what you should have in there to make your game work. :)

Can you point me to the portion of the site where I can find out how to install the new patch? I tried installing before, it didn't work.
Sorry for posting so late, thank you for your reply.

Just a response to let you know that Tafferpatcher did in fact work for thief 2. A definite reccomendation to anyone also experiencing this glitch!!
Yet I'm having another problem with thief 1. The patch doesn't seem to think that thief 1 is installed, no matter how many times I re-installed it through steam, and backed up the files in another foulder. Sorry to bother you again, but despite the patch working, the game isn't installed properly, I guess.
