Diversify your portfolio!
Kidding aside, I am definitely obsessed, I would be in the middle of a nightclub, drunk, and begin talking to someone about how innovated thief was/is.
I know the mental reason though, it has a real life association to my childhood. I grew up working at many renaissance faires, where, my friends and I would sneak around the window-lit faire site at night. I haven't been as happy as that in a long time. It crushed me to leave that life in 97. In 1998 Thief:TDP brought a lot of that feeling back, plus the engine was so immersive. And the story... it was actually like a steampunk world I built for my role-playing game that I used to run for those faire kids.
It will always be special to me but, alas, there is a big world out there. Get out there and make things happen and thief will still be here.

Thief has helped me a lot in dark times, when I needed not to think about some problems, there it was, occupying all my mind thus not letting me go to the "dark side" of me.
I've always loved this game, and still do, a lot, but I also love life, so many things to do!!!!

Thief is my second favorite game after Deus Ex but I must admit that I cannot play the original any more after only 1 proper playthrough! although I started more times than any other game. And I play one or two fan missions every several months or so, but just thinking about Thief makes me excited and warm inside

If any interest is affecting your ability to lead a productive and fullfilling life then it is a problem. You don't have to give up your hobbies though; just make sure you're giving other aspects of your life the attention they need.

I got quite obsessed myself, at one point when the topic of videogames came, up, all I'd throw around was Thief (and can you blame me for lauding the best game series ever made? ;)).
I think the key is indeed diversifying your portfolio. And it's also the way to keep the passion alive. I've been playing Thief since 2003-2004, and the interest continues. But I regularly go a month or 2 without playing it, focusing on other interests or games, my girlfriend (whom I successfully converted to Thief by the way ), etc. Then when I go back to playing, it's almost new, it's exciting...not exactly like the first time, but almost. I do consider Thief one of the pillars of my life, but like anything, moderation is key. I love sushi, but if I started binge eating it every day I'd get fed up with it fast

almost seems like something i would post, but one thing is missing all the people that love me so much flaming the board :P
also to many loop holes in story for me to get that deep into game and unexplained character background left untold for me to get that deep into thief for it to be a problem in my life
and finally thief reboot is not thief 4,i wish people would stop saying that, the reason why is one day thief 4 might come out

You sound like me.
There was a time when I too worried about my obsession with Thief, but long ago I realized that it's just my passion and I'm not going to feel guilty about it. And it's not like Thief just compromises my real life - it also compromises my gaming life, as several new games I start up or mean to play end up getting pushed to the sideline in favor of more Thief, whether that be OM / FM replays or new FMs.
I first played Thief (Thief Gold, fall of 2000) after my family moved to a new area and I started at a new school. Being shy and asocial, a new environment was all the more intimidating for me. Already a gamer, I found the greatest escape yet in Thief. It's lived with me since as a preferable world to spend my time in, and I don't regret it. Heh, I'm not just a gamer and a Thief fan, I'm a gamer and a Thief fan who has been disillusioned with everything but games. I shudder to think what my life would have been like were it not for Thief (and games in general, but especially Thief).
So, no, you're not mentally ill. It's everyone else who is (and I'm not being facetious).
Game on, brother! Or should I say, bruder!
Thief forever!

Start by getting out of the house more, talk to people, pick up a sport. If that doesn't help (but it probably will) then hospital is probably the next step, yes.

I became so obsessed with playing TMA FMs that I actually went down the list of those FMs offered on the Thief Cheap Missions site (and The Circle site, too) and played all of them. After which I was totally burned out on Thief, so I took a six year break during which I played lots and lots of other games (like Deus Ex (trilogy), Mass Effect (trilogy), Far Cry (quadrilogy), Half Life (both), and Stalker (trilogy), to name a few). Now I'm back (after becoming obsessed with Dying Light and finally breaking that obsession) and have been playing the TMA FMs released during my hiatus from Thief, as well as a few old favorites. I think I've cured my Thief obsession by expanding my horizons (game-wise), but Thief (especially TMA) will always be my first love.
Any kind of serious obsession is not a good thing, but if you've already realized you're obsessed then you're half-way there to curing that.
