This isn't the same Garrett. He wasn't taken in and trained by the Keepers, so he probably spent many years as a street thug. It's not surprising that he's adept at violence.
Sorry my ignorance but, where have you seen this?

Considering Thief's been in development about as long as Dishonored, I think it's less a case of EM ripping off Arkane, and more that the two teams probably found themselves working on similar ideas around the same time. Think Borderlands and Rage. Two entirely different games with a shocking amount of similarities.
Ah, that's true. I was just under the impression that EM either didn't get deep into working on this thing, really, or started making many changes to the game until around the time Dishonored was released.

I think in Thief 1 a guard who is hunting for you can still be KO'd but one who had seen you could only be KO'd from behind?
Pretty much yes, but you have to KO the latter in the dark.

I don't think I've heard any of the Eidos Montreal people state that Garrett wasn't trained by the Keepers, but they have avoided any mention of him being trained by the Keepers when talking about his personal history.

History
As a child, after escaping the orphanage he grew up in, Garrett’s very survival depended on stealing - and he has honed his thievery skills to perfection. His pickpocketing skills are unmatched; while he was still young he learned to swiftly relieve people’s possessions while they go about their daily business, leaving many to believe they’ve accidentally misplaced their belongings. He is the top in his trade, untraceable, uncatchable and silent in the night. He is a self-reliant observer who sees more than others, and knows more than he lets on.
Garrett’s personal mantra is ‘What’s yours is mine’. Although Garrett once stole to live, now he lives to steal. It is less for the gold and more for the lure of the impenetrable, the impossible, the secret, the unknown. The challenge is what keeps his body and mind alive and sharp. He never steals from the rich to give to the poor – no matter how poor they are... nor how rich.

I'm not sure we're going to see eye-to-eye on this. I'm not talking about the gameplay implications; in gameplay terms it doesn't matter if Garrett clubs someone, breaks their neck, or whispers a sleep spell into their ear. But each of those options changes the kind of
character Garrett is.
Yeah, I agree.
Whist I've previously been fairly optimistic about this game now that it's coming together and we're seeing it I realise that the missing thing is the direction they are taking it. This Garrett is very, very different to the original. Being able to take someone out like that requires a level of combat training and aggression that Garrett never had. They may not mean it that way but I think Garrett would find NuGarrett a very blunt instrument.

So ... Thief Taker General, huh?
Months ago I started a thread asking what major improvements you'd want to see in a thief sequel. My suggestion was that I'd like to see a mechanic whereby Garrett wouldn't always be completely safe in the shadows, completely in control, dictating the pace of the game. I thought you could turn that into a single person who was capable of flushing Garrett from the shadows, and have him be a major plot element.
And now EM have someone who potentially fits the bill. Seems unlikely that they've included any mechanics by which this man can flush the player from the shadows, or if they do then it won't be a big enough part of the game to make much difference, but we'll see. Hopefully he leads to some interesting situations and isn't just a bit of window dressing on the story.
And his name is...Benny
That or Matthew Hopkins Truart

What they really should have done was made Benny into Garrett's trusty dog named, Benji, as a throwback reference for all the old fans.

And have a section where you play as the dog.

The new trailer seems to imply that he's still connected to the Keepers in this one. I think they were intentionally burying the mythology in the early marketing for fear of turning off potential new-comers.
