GTA 5 has made 800 million in 24 hours. That is mind blowingly awesome and irrelevant to the topic at hand.

I'm with Bukary on this one. At this point I don't see much about the game changing, at least not in the ways I was hoping it would, so I've pretty much lost interest. It's become a game that's more of a sad joke (to me) than anything else. Tired of arguing, too.
The mean-girl in me just hopes EM ends up choking on all their T4 hype in the end.
Yeah, I'm out of coffee this morning.
:grr:

Maybe that's what they (EM) wanted - to make us apathetic, so they will complete NuThief development with no criticism from us at all?
At this point, the game has to be complete. I imagine a February release is for time to fit the disc pressing and packaging into the manufacture's schedule, warehouse the finished product, and ship.

It's 6 months away. Do they go gold so early?
Renzatic on 22/9/2013 at 06:44
Most games go gold within 2-3 weeks of shipping. But 6 months? I guess they could get that early of a start if they want to have a billion physical copies lying around on store shelves...

Mainly, the game is probably complete, I agree. But I think that there are always a lot of things to do, even at this point: tests, tests, tests - beta-test, final compilation, final test.

It's unlikely that the game will fulfil sales expectations for Square Enix; the Tomb Raider Reboot sold millions of units but still fell short of the unrealistic expectations they put in the property.
So much of modern development is tied up with expensive merchandising/publicity, chasing after the latest graphical innovations and developing new engines/systems rather than making the ones already released realise their potential or even work that it's hard for a game to turn a profit.
The fierce competition between developers and the resultant fear that they'll be out-manoeuvred by their rivals drives costs up, leaves them scrabbling after the lowest common denominator and ends up hurting the consumer.
Even if the entire Thief fandom was behind this game I don't think it would end up being profitable. The devs did their best; making Garrett look like an Assassins Creed character, welcoming new gamers by rebooting the universe, adding achievements/experience rewards in the style of fantasy rpgs and modern FPS games but it won't be enough. Thief is a niche property with hardcore trappings and once the Call of Duty/Assassins Creed players hear that it's still harder than those games they won't buy it.
Fans are in a tricky position: what is worse? A game that to become profitable/popular becomes a clone of other modern AAA games simply wearing the Thief name? Or a loyal continuation of a beloved franchise that's too niche to mean worthwhile return on the developers investment and is so doomed to underperform and not see serious investment for another decade?

Huh? For fans it's a no-brainer -- of course they want to see a loyal continuation.

That just seems like the easy answer. NuThief has managed to sneak many of the things that made Thief games fun into the new title (if the hands-on experiences are to be believed). If NuThief proves successful we could see DLC packs or sequels that give us everything we've hoped for: Undead, Pagans, Hammers, WATER!!! If on the other hand the fans won't support EM's effort Thief will be listed as an unprofitable venture by Square-Enix and won't see the light for another 10 years.
I think fans need to take the long view. Supporting NuThief may seem like rewarding bad behaviour but I'd like to think the Devs would pay attention to the games critical response. Atm they can dismiss the fanbases' quibbles by reassuring themselves that we'll change our tune once we finally play it but once the game is out they will be receptive to player reaction.
In short if NuThief does well (a long-shot as my above post pessimistically predicts) we could see more (better) Thief games (or games with a similar focus on TRUE stealth gameplay) getting released.
Wouldn't that be worth it?

They have decided to get rid of these components of the universe in their first game (NuThief 1), so why should they bother to bring them back into their second game (NuThief 2)?

So you think it'll be
our (community's) fault if
their game will fail?

I already have one - I don't support the company that doesn't care about me.

No, they won't. They ignored us for years, and they'll continue do that, no matter what.

If we will support NuThief 1, then NuThief 2 will be even worse.
