Thought this was interesting enough to be posted on it's own:
Quote:
According to Thief's Lead Level Designer, Daniel Windfeld Schmidt, the game will feature an old-school mode of sorts. Activating it will disable elements on the heads-up display and tone down master thief Garrett's special abilities. If you want to sneak through unseen - sans notifications, contextual helpers and slow-motion swipes - this will be the way to do it.

If it's exactly how they describe it above, that's pretty awesome, even taking out the slow motion parts.

I just hope it won't be an old-school mode in name only, like Bioshock Infinite's so-called 1999 mode that was nothing oldschool nor hard.

Well, it's definitely encouraging. :thumb:
As far as I'm concerned, the gameplay of the new Thief will be A-OK. Currently, I'm more worried about the quality of the presentation and some (not all) aspects of the atmosphere. :erg:
As long as the gameplay and various difficulty and control options in the game are flexible, I have nothing but trust for Eidos Montreál.

Well that's certainly the first encouraging bit of T4 news I've heard so far. However, I second skacky's concern.

I wonder if this turns off the screen fades & flashes when you're in darkness or light (which I wasn't that excited about since it seemed a bit binary & hand-holdy). There's an option in Dark Mod where you can turn off the light gem and play without, and I have to admit it's sort of cool to play that way sometimes, using instinct and paying more attention to your surroundings to judge how visible you are. That might be fun for T4, if there isn't an option to have a light gem at all.
Edit: For the record, the first thing I did after playing the first level of Dishonored vanilla was to turn off everything, all the popups and hud things, and I found it much more to my liking the rest of the game. (Just a few times I'd turn on the objective arrow when I got lost, then back off; be nice if that could be a quick-key toggle though). The only thing I couldn't turn off that I wished I could was the persistent loot-glint on the pick-up-ables, and the awkward large size of them. But if this old school option for T4 is minimalist like Dishonored was, as well as sans any loot glint or weird sizes, then it will make me enjoy the game pretty well, I think.

We will have to mod it. I'm calling it now, there will be some elements of the mode that we don't want, and things outside the mode we'd still like. We will have to make our own version. They already don't get how we like our Thief served up, so it will be pure luck that they get it right in any mode.
Swoop mode, flashing smoky streaked HUD, takedowns we have to stand by and watch unfold...

A few games have been putting in these "old school" modes. I'm a fan. Was also pleased with all the configuration options in Human Revolution and Dishonored that let you turn off the cheaty HUD elements and the like.

I do like how companies have kinda made it an industry standard, in a lot of cases, to put in the time and effort to provide those options.
Will Thief[4] appeal to at least 1/3 of female gamers to male gamers as the older titles did, praising it as a thinking woman's game? That's a poll I look forward to in 2015.

Slow motion?!?!?!?!?! *Chokes and dies*

I so hate the matrix and everything it has affected since it came out. Everything is crappy "bullettime" :(

While it sounds very noble of them to be "thinking" about us old-schoolers, have they nothing new to offer us? If we turn everything off, then what will we be left with? I have a feeling it will still be considerable less than what we would expect. In terms of Thief I am a traditionalist, but that is not to say that I don't want any new features. Isn't EM creative enough to think of some new features that can satisfy old-schoolers? This old dog can be taught new tricks. . . just as long I get rewarded with my favorite treats.
