Well i've got Acer 5920 with 8600Gt and i'm using 174.70. No problem at all. I'm playing with DDFix and Widescreen fix.

Is the widescreen fix used to people with a widescreen computer display?

@kongmoself
Before you start the game go to the windows display properties (accessed by right clicking on the desktop or through the control panel), then go to Advanced->Troubleshoot. Move the slider left until it says that all Direct 3D accelerations are disabled. If it won't even run in software mode, I suspect the problem is not your video card.

I just tried and that didn't work either:( Want me to post system specs or am I lost forever?:(:D
Guess I'll have to buy the new "box", with all the games in. That one should be XP (dvd) compitable.
That's just a lot of money and I'm doing a roleplaying books big time buy.

Start the Nvidia control Panel, go to Manage 3D Settings, add an entry for Thief. Everything should be 'off', which the exception of texture filtering which is 'clamp', anti-aliasing is application controled except for gamma correction which is off, vertical sync is application controlled.

This thread is supposed to be about drivers that work or don't work, not general errors. Maybe you need to start another thread.
That said, versions that are "XP compatible" re-releases are much less likely to work than older versions.

I'm playing on a laptop running Vista, with a 8600M GT. I've tried a number of drivers ranging down to 163, through various 169s, and currently 174.31. In all cases I've been able to run Thief 2 and System Shock 2 (haven't tried Thief Gold), but I've had to use DDfix to make them look good. And they do indeed look good and run well, except that no matter how many drivers and video card tweakers I've tried, I can't get fog to show up in Thief 2.

The latest version of DDFIX works well with fog. I hate to mention the obvious, but have you checked your settings in the game menu, under Options / Video?

Less likely as in "The XP compatible version is more likely to NOT work than non-XP compatible". That seems a bit un-likely
