I love Thief and would welcome another edition to the series if only because it will introduce the original games to new audiences. I never got to play Thief 2014, but I think I will eventually.
As much as I'm looking forward to Dishonored 2, it doesn't replace Thief. So maybe we'll get a new one in the next four years *crosses fingers*

Well if Dishonored is as good as the marketing promises I would be happy having Dishonored somewhat continuing the tradition as a spritiual sequel.

Of course its all just speculation but I'm guessing due to the mixed reaction to Thief 2014 (and possibly mediocre sales?) They might be revealing a new IP instead of delving back into the Thief universe.
If they took the real criticism of the Thief reboot and worked to address it in a sequel I could get behind that but who knows...
SE was actually rather pleased with the sales. Critical reception was indeed mixed, but not to bad.
So, there is a good chance that EM has been working on another Thief project for some time now, as it is hard to believe that one long developed game (Mankind Divided) was only project studio of that size was working on for the last two years. It is also worth mentioning that not a single mention of "New IP" was made in relation to their E3 reveal, and it is safe to assume that SE would tease something like " announcement of brand new franchise from the acclaimed Deus Ex developer" right away.

All I've seen them say about Thief sales were that they were "favorable." To me, that sounds like kind of a lukewarm thumbs up. The fact that we never saw any real DLC tells me that sales were likely average at best.
That said, it wouldn't surprise me at all if they reboot the series again and keep trying to make it successful, like they've done with their other franchises.

Yeah, even Hitman got another game despite Absolution absolutely sucking. Thief Episodes might actually become a thing, depending on how the Hitman game pans out.

Not a bad idea! Episodes are a great format for Thief - it's one of the reasons fan missions are popular to this day.

That might actually happen, given how Square seems to be really serious about introducing episodic format to their high profile AAA releases (even the upcoming Final Fantasy VII remake will be episodic).

I'd actually have to agree with this. Episodic Thief would be interesting. And the game could be modified to some degree depending on any fan community criticism. You could literally keep it going forever as long as sales were good.
That said, I don't know how good current Hitman sales are, but the reviews/rating on Stem are average at best, right around 55-65% right now.
