It says they could care less about what the fans want and only care about what THEY want. Thus, I think it will FLOP! Don't believe me? Watch and see.
I think Yahtzee said it best...
"Maybe if the original creators of something don't want to continue it then you should listen to them, because otherwise you're only making it to please the fans. And why would you want to do anything for fans? I mean, I'm a Silent Hill fan and I've just spent the whole review whining like a broken motor. Fans are clingy, complaining dipshits who will never ever be grateful for any concession you make. The moment you shut out their shrill, tremulous voices, the happier you'll be for it."
And all of you are proving him right. I say it's better EM try to honor the series in their own way, rather than trying to please all you people, and end up with something halfassed that you'll end up hating anyway.
If it sucks it sucks. If it's good it's good. Based on what little we've seen, what little we know, it's could kinda go either way at this point. All we know 100% at this point is it's gonna be different.

Tell me you're not actually quoting Yahtzee for pearls of wisdom.

OK, what is up with the condescending, elitist bullshit? I've seen multiple instances of this from you (do a search if you need to). I think you're a Thief fan - but you're so anxious to separate yourself from everyone here and put yourself up on a pedestal. So, why are you posting and reading here? I'm not saying you shouldn't, but you seem so convinced that everyone here besides you are just a bunch of idiots and losers, I'm not sure why you keep returning. Maybe it makes you feel good about yourself.

So, what should the regulars here do? Should we just say nothing until the game is released? Is it so bad to offer an opinion on the information that's been released so far, even if some of it is nitpicking? Even you are admitting that the game could "go either way at this point." So you don't have the blinders on like thiefessa, yet you can't stand to hear the diehards here give their thoughts on what we've heard. I really just don't get you.

I could agree with this sentiment and the quote to some degree, if I believed that AAA game developers were going to ignore the fans so they could instead accomplish their own artistic vision and interpretation of the series. These days, the fans and original series are typically ignored because their "vision" of game is tied more to sales, than to their creative aspirations. Personally, I don't see that as a respectable reason to shut out the fan base, or alter the praised and successful elements of past entries.

Yeah, I couldn't care less about the business of game development, and the vice-grip of publishers, and marketing calling the shots, other than that they fail to interest me, entertain me more than superficially--if that--or feed the needs I have to escape real life for a time to recharge, 99% of the time. I've had to put gaming behind me for so long that filling my time with productive interests that do engage me makes it easy to not devote my time and money to so much fluff. I don't have a lifestyle habit of buying games, waiting for the next game before I'm done playing the new one, and getting the new game as soon as possible, and on and on. EM's actually over-talked the game, saying too much about things several of us have not even cared about for many long years, and aren't even acting much like they have some really neat secrets. They want us to buy into how kewl the things they show us are, and I find it a bad omen that what they really want us to get into isn't that big a deal. Why do they want us to be drooling over Garrett's groping hands? It's just weird, like some surreal cultural gulf.
Make a product that hits the spot, and you'll have my loyalty and my money. And if the artists continued to receive money for years after initial release, I'd buy more copies, and promote the titles.
I'm not sure why I'm supposed to honor EM, and why I should honor misguided creations designed to take money not provide meaningful entertainment. If they made a Thief game with Thief in mind, not an overly-reductive and bare interpretation, that is half-assed already, with the other half being quite ass in the context of this game, but perfect for other brands and entire other audiences, then it would please "all" of us few. Thief pleased the few of us there are, here, with each of us not liking this or that in each game. A new game should include us, not cut us out. A great Thief title would include the established fanbase, and the rest wouldn't matter, though of course there will be threads about flaws 'till the end of time.

Why does it matter who it comes from? Even a fool desires oxygen.
jtr7 on 19/4/2013 at 07:18
Done "my way", Thief would please everyone here, and hardly anyone would be 100% pleased. There would be a Bell Curve and variety of what players like and dislike, as usual, and no fan would be disgusted or disappointed who wasn't already burnt-out, destined for the one extreme of the Bell Curve. You and I would both be pleased, and naturally, not about everything, as it's been with each title. I am baffled that EM will not show us the stuff guaranteed to please Thief fans, not just gamers who don't think of Thief in any special way. They've paved half of Paradise and put up a parking lot and convenience store selling junk food. I owe them nothing, and they've given me nothing but a T-shirt and two bumper stickers with a logo the game really is living up to. Everything's on hold until some time after the game is released, and who knows if it really is the end of a productive time, or if it's just breath held and oxygen-deprived afterall. I still have hope for a turnaround, but EM's marketing needs to get out of the way if they aren't going to put their product in a good light that isn't obviously superficial and trying to get something by on us.

Done my way everyone would be happy apart from nitpickers. The game would be playable in a proper old school manner for those that want, being merely a graphical update with exactly the same mechanics as Thief 1 and 2.
jtr7 on 19/4/2013 at 07:27
I don't want anyone here to be disappointed with the game. I'm not fighting for anything that will ruin fans' fun. This is one of many reasons I can't trust your opinion in the matter, nor follow your line of thinking. I don't want EM to fail, I don't want Thief to fail the fans. If it fails the fans, I have no reason to kiss EM's arse, and they are failing the fans, inch-by-inch, and their attitude in interviews about the fans is doing it by the mile.
Nothing I say here can hurt the enjoyment you WILL have when you play Thief[4], and nothing you can say will cure what ails me.
