Thief[4] will be awesome if Paul Weir's work is as homemade and admiring of the Brosius years as his shared media for Thief[4] suggests!
This is really the one thing I'm worried about the most. The music and soundscapes were directly responsible for Thief being as moody and atmospheric as it was. Without it, the game would've seemed far more flat and uninteresting.
Paul Weir or whoever we've got now had better do his homework, because Thief isn't Thief without it's thiefy Eric Brosius sounds.

Don't say that out loud!!
(I agree)
I hope Paul was able to create all the sound FX from scratch like he set out to do.

I haven't heard, so I'll ask - are they actually going to go for proper music in this one? I would prefer the more ambient approach. Thief and Half Life are the only game series I even leave the music on for at the moment, all that soaring LotR or Hans Zimmer style OTT roaring you have in most games really gets on my boobs. Minimal, sinister stuff is definitely the way forward - soundscapes, if you will (aargh) rather than soundtracks. That was one of the things I loved about Arx Fatalis (a game in general I felt a little underwhelmed by). I still stick the underground lakes theme on when I'm working sometimes.

ooh! That sounds way more promising than I was expecting, actually. Thanks! Yeah, sounds like this guy is actually pretty on it. Wicked.

Out of the last few years, he brought us the most tangible good news most of us liked.

Yeah, that is pretty spot on (though I hope they use some of the weirder sound effects, like the "WWWAAATT" alarms the Hammerites used in the abandoned district).
But are they still using Paul Wier's stuff? He left the dev team a little while back, didn't he?

It's a shame that he left. They might use his music...we'll see...and yes, he left EM over a year ago.

I will miss the heavily filtered and harsh stuff, as well as the simple tonal loops, but I hope they are present and just used judiciously, or something.
Paul left in 2011, and said his work was completed (at the time he said it in a way that had people worried, but he clarified), so I don't know what his replacement's been doing, other than mocap/dialogue and probably voice acting, voice directing. Paul lists that he Sound Designer and Audio Director and Composer.
Quote:
I was the audio director, composer and sound designer for Thief 4 and was responsible for all the audio content in the game and the audio direction, making sure that the sound was as closely integrated into game-play as possible.
"All audio content" suggest voice, too, but I don't think so.
