Thief 4 will be awesome because... - by jay pettitt

Truth be told, from what I've seen and read, I think they're going for a kind of "soft reboot". I think they'll keep most of the original lore intact, while excising some bits of it that wouldn't fit the story they'll be going for in this installment. It might actually very well be a loose sequel to the original trilogy, though one with several retcons. They are probably using the term "reboot" in hopes to lure new players who haven't tried the previous trilogy yet - after all, it's going to be
10 years since the last
Thief game came out. I say : Don't fully trust Eidos Monty's words about a reboot before the thing comes out... (*cough, Ridley Scott, cough
Prometheus is not an
Alien prequel, honest, cough* ;))
On an unrelated note, I like the new grappling hook. I hope it will work fine. But I also have a question that has been bugging me : Have the devs mentioned how it will be used ? Is it basically just a heavier arrow projectile with a grappling hook that you'll just shoot from the bow ? Or is it used via a completely new tool/weapon, á la a grappling hook "pistol" ?

Since it won't be moddable, we won't have much reason to replay it much. Well ... I've replayed dishonored levels to get perfect runs. If the stealth gameplay is as good as that I might do that with T4 too. But I'll still be continuing with T2 & tdm FMs for the type I like the most.
Are you sure that the devs said "there will be no modding for this one, sorry" ?

They didn't have to. It's unwritten.

"If God is willing, even a rake might shoot", goes an old Slovak saying. :cheeky: So, maybe a rake will actually pop a shot and the devs will release at least some partial modding tools. Just sayin', just being mildly optimistic. ;)
Look at TDS: It wasn't going to be open to modding either, but after fan pressure, the devs caved in and released some of the needed SDK.
Even in this day and age, when certain publishers don't have a very favourable stance towards modding, there still are many who encourage it. I'm not talking small indie games now. I'm talking mega-hyped AAA games as well, particularly the third
Fallout series and the fifth
TES. Sure, SE might not be Bethesda, but times and business practices change. And SE is still only gradually adapting to Eidos' prior portfolio and audience that they inherited with their takeover.

You haven't answered my question about the grappling hook, though.

If they have modding, I'll be happy to see it, even at the risk of fragmenting the FM scene more. It'd be worth it to play with those lush func_statics. I wished dishonored had modding too. I just highly highly doubt it.

Is that the grapple visible in the screenshot of Garrett leaping?

Enter Focus mode, see the appropriate place, move to the place, see "press E to use the claw", press E, watch Garrett climb.

I really hope the grappling claw won't be one of those items where there is a tightly-fixed limit where it can be used. One of the really nice things about T1 and T2 was that you could use those all over the place - the level design really lent itself to rope arrows. I do like the idea, though - totally ok with this as a rope arrow replacement.
I am also really looking forward to a *big* environment. T3 was a good game, but the levels were simply too constrained by console limits at the time. There's a lot more hardware to play with these days.
I am very heartend by the developer statements regarding "inspiration" from Dishonored. Dishonored was certainly not a Thief game, but it really was a great game. You could certainly play it in a stealthy fashion.
I like the fact that they're downplaying the "mystic" stuff, it was the one thing I thought was pretty jarring about Dishonored. This studio also did a fantastic job with DX:HR, so I think T4 is in good hands, even if they say "Teef" a lot :cheeky:

One of the big reasons to be excited that no-one seems to be mentioning that much is that, while it's on consoles, it's one these fabled next-gen jobs. I have no idea what that means in specs, but it's got to at least mean more RAM (and hence larger levels). I doubt we'll be getting LotP style huge, but it should be worlds better than the 64 (64!) MB shoeboxes of TDS, and logically quite a lot more than the quite decent-sized maps of Dishonored.

Say, if Garrett can hang hands-free from the rope attached to his corset-harness, that would be awesome. It's also something the devs wanted way back, but couldn't figure out how to maintain the relationship between the Garrett model and the rope. Being able to shoot with the bow from the rope is something I've wanted for awhile, for some kinds of locations where I found myself in perfect position to make a wicked shot or plant another rope over in an unintended spot. If the devs have now allowed this, there could be some crazy experimenting and emergent possibilities, if they don't force it into puzzles too much.
