Pretty interesting and even refreshing. When they switch everything off it looks so, so much better!
Settings on display are:
* Base Diffiicult - Rouge, Thief or Master
* Classic Thief Mods
* Chapter Saves Only - Manual saves and auto-checkpoint saves disabled.
* No Focus
* Stealth Takedowns only - no combat takedowns or takedowns from above
* No Reticle
* Legendary Thief Mods
* Speciality arrows only - Only blunt, water, fire and rope arrows available
And you can turn all the HUD - mini map, waypoints, threat icons, etc - off. Nice.

It's a terrible shame, there isn't any legitimate "oldschool mode" that offers a real classic THIEF experience...only the pretension of one, in quasi-form.

The shroud doesn't look too bad in that video. I can see it in some scenes, and it seems to be all the way in the corners of the screen. Hopefully that's what the final version will look like (if they didn't include an option to turn off the shroud).

Yes, my idea of a proper old school mode would include SR's voice for Garrett

And what, to your mind, qualifies as a "real classic Thief* experience?"
* I'll be f ked if I'm typing it in all caps

I agree, so many aspects of The Dark Project that formed a cohesive gaming experience have been restricted and/or mutated. Amidst the vast array of simplistic gaming ideals that NuTeam has presented, nothing makes a broader statement than the lack of 1st person free form exploration physics. The contextual movement removes the sense of creative exploration that was an equal part of the magic that made Thief work as a whole game.
They think they can just put the player on rails through the cinematic velvet story that they are just dying to tell, all the while classic and meaningful game play falls by the wayside. Here is an interesting aside: we have a guy in ThiefGen who never heard anything about Thief until NuThief came along recently. He then traced its roots back to Dark Project and began playing Thief Gold. Now, he is doing well, he gets it, which makes a lot of old timers envious of that virgin run.
Since this guy is getting a proper crash course in Thief, 16 years after the fact, what do you think his opinion on NuThief will be? If he sees right through it, what could that mean? Regardless, a percentage of people who actually buy this game will inevitably find the games roots. What will they think of the game then?
The first Thief was certainly a dark and forboding game with a thick and tense atmosphere. It was stripped down and precise with controls tighter than a funeral drum. It delivered the story that it was destined to reveal. I wonder if NuTeam has also concerned themselves with this high standard of game design.

I wasn't aware that the game was 3rd person with exclusively linear hallways and also didn't feature any physics. Tell me more about the early copy you've been playing, please.

Listen, everything I am saying falls under the umbrella of contextual movement. Everyone already knows this. If you cant be bothered to read up on it, because it was recent-ish and quite impactful, what do you want from me?! Im not the right guy to sit here and cleverly rip you to shreds because you simply dont have a piece of information. I am the type of person who just cant wait to share it with you!
And it still is, NuThief has chosen to use contextual game play versus the free form exploration model that the original Thief was built upon. What this means for you the gamer: You can no longer shoot a rope arrow anywhere you want. Only where they think you should, and this will be marked on the screen for you. You can no longer jump anywhere you want. Seriously. You can literally only "jump" when it is context appropriate. Now, this alone... I dont want to say words like defiles, but...

And how do you know that you can't jump on nearly every single object in the game by pressing a dynamic action button when you are in proximity? Other than your early access copy of the game, I mean.
The whole point here is that you constantly make wild sweeping assumptions that are based on nothing but your own personal bias and disdain for anything that isn't exactly the same as your preconceived notions of what makes a game good. You can't even begin to make the claim that the movement system in Thief is going to be detrimental to the gameplay for one simple reason. YOU HAVE NOT PLAYED IT. You can speculate all you want, but please quit throwing your
opinion around like it's the one pure truth and we should all bow down before your brilliance for allowing us to hear you spew it forth every 23 seconds of your life.

The early access thing is getting old, but, as I have said... everyone already knows this. Why are you barking up *my* tree about it?
