Thief 4 is a prime example of all (or most) of the reasons why I hate modern games - by FatSpy

...And Justice for All
4th metallica album? That one was pretty underwhelming in comparison to Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning.

But to be honest, I totally agree... every game today has to be soo simple every idiot can play it. Though what I don't understand... everyone can play Super Mario and it still is a hard game!
what I hate most in modern game is all the half attempts to put some feature here and there, like stealth: "Elder scrolls 4/5, Dishonoured, Metro"
plus the linearity:( I was playing Metro 2034 recently and at first I though " Hey some nice stealth features, looks like large levels" but then I found out that stealth meant pressing a light switch and no one can see you, levels seem large, but you have to exactly follow the path the dev's want, there aren't any alternative routes, not even small ones...
I noticed current FPS games being mentioned, I know some people call them hard. Look at call of Duty 4,5,6,7,8,9,... the only reason why they are hard at some point is because there are some spawn points which keep spawning tons of enemies until you reach that exact spot...
I also saw Star Citizen mentioned, this is one of the games I look forward to, but isn't really an AAA game, which was what the OP was complaining about. This might however set a good example for future generations of games!
Lastly... I noticed I only play games today which are old and have great fanbases:
star trek Armada ((
www.fleetops.net))
star trek SFC (dynaverse.com)
Freespace (hard-light.net)
Falcon 4/freefalcon (seems to have died sadly)
Blade of darkness
and of course the best of all
Thief 2

What you need, sir, is to play some indie scene games. They tend to cater to that oldschool sensibility we all miss so much.
Either that, or Dark Souls.

Well.... sounds like you have a point, but where to start?
and Dark souls 1, or wait for 2?

Since I'm a bastard, I'll suggest Super Meat Boy. You're only cool if you beat both the light and dark worlds. Teleglitch and Cave Story are also good games to try.

Get DS1 now, then DS2 when it comes out in...March, I think? Assuming DS2 is as long as DS1, you've got a good couple hundred hours of game to look forward to.
We've got an entire thread of woe and wailing and gnashing of teeth dedicated to it up in Gen Gaming. You can come up there and cry with us.
edit: If you want to see what you're about to get yourself into, (

And a tad dark. But what I could see looked pretty damn good. Looks like it would be hard too. I got it awhile back when it was on sale and haven't played it yet. Keep forgetting about when I'm trying to decide on that next game to play. :(
I could barely handle Darksiders 1, at first, but I soon got the hang of it and loved every minute of those (DS1 & DS2). How would you say Dark Souls compare to those? Mainly how much you liked them compared to Dark Souls (if you played the others) because I can look up all the gameplay vids I want. :p
Renzatic on 19/10/2013 at 22:37
Since I never got around to play any of the Darksiders, I can't say how similar they are. The one game I see it most compared to around here is another one I haven't played: Blade of Darkness. From what I've seen of the videos, Dark Souls does look a good bit like a slightly slower, slicked up version of that game.
Do what Bonusbartus did. Read through the thread we've got up in Gengaming and see if it sounds like something you'd like.

I agree that some things that we have heard are in Thief 4 look pretty bad, but I'll wait until it's released before I decide whether I'll like it overall. It may not be good as a Thief game, but it could still be a "not bad" game overall (just like Thief 3, in my opinion). The bad news has put me off getting a 1st day release, I'll wait a year or so and pick it up in a sale.

Hello everyone.
This is my first post, although I've been watching the discussions here for quite a while (mainly looking for the most praised thief FMs in order to play them...)
I've been a gamer since the mid 90s, I have the original CDs of Thief 1 and 2 and have played them several times over the years. Recently I started playing the FMs and am very impressed with their quality.
This discussion has touched a nerve within me. It speaks of similar issues that I have with modern AAA games. For me, KoHaN69 has nailed the problem:

One problem I have is 'press X to not die' and 'cover mechanics'
F*** cover mechanics. They're a direct result of shitty controller limitations. All mechanics that disconnect you from the game needs GO.
Anything that 'press x to z' needs to stop. It's much more immersive to walk up a ladder than 'activate climbing mode' and mount to it, or to walk up behind enemies and melee them, instead of 'activating take down'
For me, the number one problem of modern AAA games is that they are ports of console games, along with the control schemes and checkpoint save systems. These two traits of console gaming kill the immersion and fluidity of the PC gameplay.
I do not have any console in my home. I tried playing a bit in a friend's house and it was a huge disappointment for me. I tried playing the PC versions of Alan Wake, DX:HR and Metro 2033 and quit all during the first mission.
In the first mission of Metro 2033, I climb to the surface with another worrier. We put on our Gas masks and start walking. After a short and nice fight against some monsters, (and no ability to save after) we come to this broken metal gate and my friend starts shaking the bars and asks for my help. The game then tells me to tap 'E' in order to shake the gate bars.
...and promptly, I quit the game and uninstalled. Luckily for me it only cost $5.
So, I will rephrase Vivian's call:
NAME A CONSOLE PORT TO PC THAT DOESN'T SUCK
(btw, my answer to the original would be Civilization iV)
On an unrelated point, I also think multi-player is inferior to single, b/c I like complicated and evolving plot, and I like to take my time exploring the env. So you see why Thief 1/2/3, Deus EX 1/2 and Splinter Cell 1/2/3 are my all time favorites (Thief 2 being number one!)

Skyrim ported over to the PC well for a console game considering it supported modifications and has way better graphics/controls than the console versions. However, it's still really watered down in comparison to older elderscrolls games. Skryim wasn't a port, beats me.But yeah AAA games are way too simplistic and repetitive in play style, and the fact that they cram in retarded dlc and use a bunch of exploitative stuff doesn't help.
There is 1 multiplayer game that stands out though in my opinion and that is the Trouble in Terrorist Town gamemode in gmod, in which the server is full of people who need to find out who the traitor is that is killing them off one by one and it causes a lot of drama. However, this gamemode got ruined by how naturally shit the gmod community is and it went from being "Who dunnit?" to abusive admins and stupid rules that limits the game to getting caught redhanded.
