Thief 4 is a prime example of all (or most) of the reasons why I hate modern games - by FatSpy

It might be because I'm a thief vet but I found dark mod quite intuitive? Like so long as you do the training mission you should be fine, really the only thing that got me was the separate use button (for all of 2 seconds) and it being enter, which was annoying so I changed that.

I think I can agree with you and Renz at the same time. The gaming culture is polarized. There's a mainstream culture and an indie culture, that itself is influenced by the mainstream culture though.
Some dominating things in the mainstream culture have left me cold & I can't ever really get into them... popups and achievements (and the design that goes around "achievements" thinking) being two big things, and handholding design. It reminds me of one of the crimes against mimesis on problems vs puzzles: great games use problems where the player finds their own ways to deal with, not puzzles to read the dev's minds of what "should" be fun, least of all when what should be fun is a caricature of what's expected.
Well said Dema! Thief gives you problems and you can solve them however you like. One of many aspect that make it such a stellar game.
In regards to your post Fatspy, I agree with you. There's a lot of great points ITT but there really is no definitive solution to what we view as problems. All the things you mentioned like DLC and watered down gameplay exist because money. Its business and it sucks but as you mentioned, the indie scene is filling the void that triple A gaming leaves. I'll be honest, some of the best games I've played recently have been smaller indie titles like Terraria and Gunpoint. My dollars went their way because I hope they can continue doing what they do. Where we spend our money is the only way we are empowered as consumers, not by posting in forums or providing feedback to developers (ahem EM). Don't like something, don't buy it. No money is the only thing they will listen to.

[-]Extremely deep story with lots of lore and complexety in the background. On the surface you just follow garrett and his story alone is simple, but thats what makes it so great because he interacts with this epic world that has all sorts of types of magic going on in it in a way that any normal person would
Another example of this is Dark Souls. Less handholding and leaving more for the player to work out equals better games.

So you've managed to get hold of a full game release to base this on FatSpy?
How about we reserve such assumptions and judgement until after release.

GTA: Vice City.
Then again, GTA: III could arguably be considered the fourth installment. Or GTA: II could be considered number 4 if you include the London '61 release. But that's just for those goddamn obsessively literal people.
Bastards.
All of 'em.

Or even GTA IV.
It sucks compared to V though because V is awesome.

Seconded! (and thirded...and fourthed!) :D
As for the rest of it: interesting points...
I for one will keep buying "games" in many forms because I like games. Games change, people change... I don't relish the idea of sitting alone in the dark waiting for that next "awesomest game evar!" and will continue to play games that come along that appeal to me. I can't wait that long, life's too short.
At first, I was disgusted and irate that (insert long list of gripes here) so much had changed, but the game looks good to me. I will most likely give it a go. I want to wait a bit longer to (pre?)order it, because I just don't like the idea of giving EM (or anyone) my money for something so far in advance when things could drastically change.
I'm currently playing through Deadly Shadows...not sure why I never finished it. It's actually pretty good. Maybe it's just because I've changed in the last 10 years or so. I don't know. But I missed out on some pretty interesting stuff only because it "wasn't exactly what I wanted". Not going to let that happen again if I can help it. But, Life's a bitch and it probably will. :nono:
Here's hoping that I'm pleasantly surprised. If not, then, well... there's more to life than just the next perfect ThiAf game. I'll survive.
