I like the TDM lockpicking system too. Only problem with it is that players who are deaf/hard-of-hearing will be left out in the cold. Literally! (since they won't be able to open the doors to get inside!)
In most cases there is a door handle (or a pin on chests), and this jiggles in sequence with the click pattern, so you actually could pick locks without the sound on those. Not every lock has that, but most do.
There is also the menu setting for "auto-pick", which essentially makes lockpicking more like T1/2...the tumbler will automatically open after 3 repeats of the click pattern.
Nice to know people like it...I had to fight pretty hard to get it accepted in our early development days. :)

TDM points the way to many things. Again, great job Broken Glass!

No, Spring and Dia think I'm wrong. Dia hasn't engaged in further discussion on it and Spring and I are discussing it. No one else of significance has disagreed in a manner coherent enough to be of consequence.
Given the context and the poster it's perfectly justified. If Dia had posted that I wouldn't have been so "tough" because Dia isn't the most outspoken anti Thief 4 poster on here.
First of all, I am
not 'anti Thief 4'; I am just concerned that all the changes EM has made to the Thief world, gameplay, character, etc., are
not going to be changes that I will like or that I think will make the game enjoyable for me. I did go off the deep end temporarily when I first found out that EM wasn't going to be using SR as the voice of Garrett, but the shock has worn off and I
am trying to keep an open mind to some extent, though there are aspects of T4 new to the Thief world as we know it that still don't sound very appealing to me no matter how EM sugar-coats them. A matter of personal preference. I have already said I'd be more than willing to play the demo (if EM has the stones to release one). I've also said repeatedly that EM hasn't released enough information yet for me to say yeah, I'll buy it or no, doesn't sound like my cup of tea. Time will tell. I just don't feel compelled to automatically accept that T4 will be an outstanding game just because it bears the 'Thief' title.
I've had time to digest what you meant in posting '
The picking Thief 1 and 2 is the same as in Thief 3, the only difference is you only had 2 options instead of 4. Otherwise functionally it's identical. Don't be fooled by the graphics.' I'm afraid all that registered initially was the first part of your statement and I took it literally. Now that I understand what you meant I've stopped debating because to me it isn't the issue I initially thought it was.

I'm anti-typical industry trends, and was happy LGS's Thief pushed away from a lot of them in a way that made the games a breath of fresh air. The more T4 embraces what I've always disliked or have been bored to death with since the 80s were coming to an end, and the more it embraces the newer things that have been added to that list, the more T4 inherently will be disliked. I hope very much that more than one PC afficianado and fan of LGS titles will get to play a non-doctored and up-to-date T4 demo, and report on how well tuned it is for mouse & keyboard. I want to know more about those options and how optional they really are. I fully expect some half-ass and wise-ass options, and lots of people jeering on the forums like they do about how 3rd-person in TDS is "optional", as if there's nothing about it affecting 1st-person or the level design. I expect the current industry to be able to avoid a lot of those mistakes, but reports indicate they are bigger fans of most of what I dislike in gaming that Thief itself. The way EM reps. keep justifying their choices has killed my F4ITH in them to uphold Thief as a game to challenge conventions. The way they let non-employees speak for them, and how they defend the opposing opinions more than not, killed my F4ITH they give a damn about the faithful community back in 2010/11. When I look to EM to restore my faith, they start to and then drop bombs all over it.

Ah yes. Must've forgotten. It's been a while since I played any TDM missions. :o

Yeah, that was my point. :p

Yeah, it's not rocket science is it? And with that key to locks that jtr posted you can see how similar it really is actually (though that one lock is actually brilliant in the way it ups the ante!).
jtr - you may say you're just anti-industry changes, and you may actually believe that's all there is to it, but your constant sniping (even the use of F4ITH in your last post is just taking a swipe at EM) in every single thread here makes it look otherwise. We'd all like a Thief game worthy of the name man, but some of us are happy to see a few changes so long as it still feels like Thief. The fact that you won't even be playing it makes your single mindedness even more odd.

A recent interview for Xbox magazine mentions a "Focus arrow" - not sure if that means an actual arrow in Garrett's arsenal, or just a helper GTA type arrow to show the player what to do (hello, atomic footprints).

Link to it man, for cripes sake!

SE, not sure if B1skit's latest post offers more insight into 3P elements and take downs?

As we've (
http://community.eidosmontreal.com/blogs/Light-Camera-Hey) specifically stated before, 3rd person cameras are used very sparingly, and specifically restricted to situations where they increase visibility - ie. Certain vertical navigation scenarios and focus mode take downs (which, as we've also stated before, are completely optional). Don't let your imagination run wild on this one - Thief is a 1st person game.
It's got nothing to do with showcasing animations or costume design (LOL!), and everything to do with increasing situation awareness and visibility in very specific gameplay scenarios. These types of design choices are HEAVILY, and repeatedly play tested at our (
http://community.eidosmontreal.com/blogs/Playtest-Lab-Tour) in-house, state of the art play test labs - the team puts every game mechanic through dozens of tests and design iterations to ensure that they're creating the best Thief game they can. Rest assured that in the specific situations that you'll see a 3rd person camera, it's been used because it was needed to ensure the best gameplay experience in that situation.

Who the hell is B1skit and why should we care about what he says?
