Hey, they have water arrows at least.
Okay, watched a minute and a half of the video. Since I've been up for well over 30 hours, I'm barely coherent, so I'm gonna keep this short and sweet.
Good - Despite some modern influences both good and bad, it does look a lot like Thief.
Meh - Focus wasn't nearly as absolutely terrible as I though it'd be, but it's not exactly wonderful either. Yeah, it's a hand (HHAAAAANNNNDSSS) holding exercise for stealth newb and mouthbreathing console players who all need to die before they breed, but since it looks more like an assist feature, and the game isn't built around it, I couldn't care less. I'll be playing in the supposed hardcore Focus-less difficult anyway, so it don't matter one bean hell hill damn to me.
Bad - XP? Really? Thief isn't Deus Ex, it doesn't need XP. And those hands. All the time hands. Neverending hands. Hands. Hands. HAAAANNNNDDDDS!

Not sure how this video could have actually alleviated your fears about Focus, but to each their own. It looks pretty much as expected to me, which is to say - terrible. And I wouldn't be too sure that the game isn't built around it, Stephane Roy says at some point in the vid that there's actually an explanation/justification in the story about why Garrett has the Focus ability.

I wouldn't say it alleviated my fear so much as shown me exactly what I thought it'd be: a neat, flashy side thing I have the choice not to use. If I want to frob everything up close and not use weak spot detection, I don't have to. Yeah, it's there to make the game easier for some people, but I don't care. I'm not gonna use it.
As for the story related tidbits, I'm not too sure about that. I'll have to see more before I make a judgement call.
Anyway, I'm going to bed soon, so I'll sum up what I think about it. Yes, there are some dumb things in there, but if these dumb things were in the original Thief, it wouldn't have effected my opinion of the game in the least. So long as the core of Thief is well represented, which it seems to be here from what I've seen, I can tolerate the occasional pandering that can be completely ignored simply by playing on a higher difficulty level.
As for the dumb AI? The game still has about a year before release. It would've bee nice to see some of the AI in action, since it's so very important to the gameplay, but I'm not gonna judge it a failure based on far from prerelease footage.
edit: Though I am concerned about the whole XP thing they've got going on. If there's any one thing I've seen that's completely out of place, it would be this.

What is the core of Thief according to you?

An interesting story, interesting characters, interesting locations that feel both living and lived in, an interesting world, and atmosphere so thick you practically have to have to use a leaf blower to cut a path through it.
It's about complexity, richly designed locations designed with multiple points of entry and multiple ways to achieve your goals, and AI smart enough to make it all seem realstic and incredibly tense. It's about being sneaky, trying to make your way unseen.
It's also scary as hell at times.
Even though Thief 4 (or nuThief) does have it's quibbles and weird and occasional overly gamey consolish points, it does at least seem to be trying to live up to the example set by its predecessors.
Really, the worst thing I can say about Thief 4 is that it both convinces me they're doing some things right, and seem to be bungling others. Because of that, I can't say I'm super excited, but I haven't seen anything that makes me utterly sick and depressed, either. I'm still pretty much on the fence, sitting here with a tempered amount of optimism.

Guy who steals and likes darkness. Probably uses arrows instead of bullets or darts. It's gotta be very narrow.

Oh for goodness sakes. What is so disappointing about T4 making its way to E3! Should we start a petition to cancel the game?
Damn, dude. Trigger-happy negativity masquerading as superior and healthier perspective?

Honestly it's nice to have at least one or two other people who are still open minded about giving the game a chance. The depressing atmosphere around here is boring sometimes. It'd be nice if people formed their own opinions once they've played it even in demo form rather than just reading what their other hardcore buddies say and immediately bandwagon jumping.
You're obviously doing your best to lead the band of negative Nancys so why not lay off anyone daring enough to have an opinion different from the hivemind?

I honestly tried to be objective, but found absolutely nothing in the video that would encourage me to even want to play it, let alone go out and buy the game. Pretty much for the same (numerous) reasons as I've given before. Just like with a movie preview, it either appeals to you or it doesn't. EM has already fallen far short of the mark imo, and seem to be creating a game that has little to do with the original Thief, but everything to do with their attempt to cater to the mass market. I really don't give a flying rat's ass how many gamers may enjoy this game, that still won't make it Thief, imo. More power to y'all, though.

You have no idea what's happening, no idea what I'm doing or why. The fact you are letting SE guide your judgment show how in the dark you are. You would be horribly embarrassed if you knew.
