Okay, those two posts are helping me understand the worry a bit more. Still, we're a year from release, and like heywood said, the combat thing isn't really a deal-breaker. I don't like it either, but I can ignore it if the other elements are in place, which they seem to be, IMO.
Yep.
My complaints aside, I still plan to try it. Probably on release day because I'm extremely impatient.
If I go in with lower expectations and am pleasantly surprised, all the better.
I will get it and I will play it like Thief is meant to be played- in a dark room by myself with the volume cranked.
Be gentle, EM- that's my thing you've got there.

Same here, for better or worse, I'll be playing this thing on Day One and getting as much out of it as I can. Games like Dishonored and DXHR have provided options to the player to turn off all the on-screen indicators, so there's no reason to think EM won't do the same thing here. That coupled with the "hard core mode" could give us a somewhat authentic Thief experience.
But I won't be happy if every time I try to blackjack an unaware AI, I'm forced to watch a dramatic cutscene.

The only things I'm having a tough time with:
No Stephen Russell. This new guy just sounds forced, IMO. Quit trying so hard, guy. Just let it flow. SR didn't try to sound like a tough guy, just sarcastic.
The visual cues are kinda over the top. Hopefully this is something we can toggle.
The third-person takedowns - also, I hope for a toggle, but it didn't ruin Deus Ex: HR, so I don't think it will ruin T4.
I did very much like the body mechanics. The "hands held out" all the time is a little weird, but whatever. The movements looked good. Combat looked good. Environments looked great.
So, I'm still cautiously optimistic.

This is my biggest concern. I'm not exactly gnashing my teeth in anger over the inclusion of 3rd person takedowns, but I sure as hell don't want to be seeing them every three minutes or so. As long as EM keeps the minimized, I can deal with it.

I have to admit I'm not too terribly thrilled about what I saw, but after mulling it over a bit while I'm not sure if I would buy it release day or wait for a steam sale or something to pick it up cheaper, I have confidence that even for all it's flaws there are people out there with more skill than I capable of modding the game for PC and making it more into the Thief we know and love, and adding more amazing fan missions as well to at least make it worth picking up at some point. Whether the game turns out great or as a pile of poo, I at least feel confident enough that someone out there will mod it, and make it better.
The atmosphere is Thief, its just the mechanics I worry about, but if it can be modded then it can be tailored to suit anyone's tastes if it doesn't appeal to everyone's playstyle right out of the box. Who knows, maybe by making this new iteration of Thief it will generate interest in the previous titles, and we could be seeing people add even more to T1, T2, and T3 along with T4 if they enjoy the taffer life.

Yes, the picture speaks a thousand unfortunate words...:(
Keep in mind, not only will there be forced 3rd-person switching for takedowns, but for the grappling hook, as well.

Dishonored is more of a new Thief title than this, especially if this game's rip-offs of it and Assassins Creed are just as optional. Even the takedowns are still 1st-person in Dishonored. Just mod the lighting to be darker.

There's barely anything in that video that even remotely resembles Assassin's Creed. You're gonna need to think of something else to bitch about, man.

From the interview with Stephane Roy...
Quote:
Geoff Keighley: This game, obviously, there is a stealth element to it. But blending together Stealth and Action, how are you guys thinking about that for this game?
Stephane Roy: It's really important, it's something that a lot of people in play test told us...A long time ago it used to be, it's really 100% stealth, and if a guard sees you it's almost kind of a rocket...death rocket you know, chasing you...
Geoff Keighley: Yep, trial and error.
Stephane Roy: Bingo. Right now a lot of people told us "Okay, we understand shadow is where we are really powerful, but if something happens we want to be able to protect, to...defend our self. So you're right, right now it's a good mix of action, but if you want to be really powerful, shadow is your friend."
NuThief will be a
stealth-action title, rather than a true THIEF
pure-stealth release.
