Real world cursing is in the game. The Baron's captain of the guard was particularly angry with a guard and dropped an "F Bomb" in his angry rant and it felt pretty shocking.
I swear constantly in real life and even I don't want to see modern swearing everywhere. A big part of Thief's charm was using language that felt antiquated. It was as if it belonged in an age where people could use swearwords like tarnation and nincompoop with a straight face and it would be considered shocking.

So was the "fricken" used in the demo just for E3 audiences?

Well.. Kinda. The hammers and pagans are the only ones that really speak all olde worldye. Everyone else just sounds sort-of british.

Agreed, one thing I'm not happy with on the new game from what we've seen so far is the tone seems so serious and lacking in humor. Part of the personality of the original games were the bumbling guards and all the funny stuff they said, Benny, the peasants/servants complaining about mundane stuff, some of the goofy readables, etc. This version of Thief seems like this intense motion picture type drama, with no room for a joke or two.
It's the difference between calling someone a taffin' idiot and a f*cking idiot. Thief was so much more subtle. Garrett never would have called someone a whore, he would have said something like "looks like she's a pro."

Are we seriously worried about whether a made up swear word is going to be used by the NPCs in this game? Is that how nitpicky this has become?

I mean, kinda. It's exactly like being a little disappointed no-one said 'drokk' in the new Dredd film. It's not that big a deal, but it would be nice, and it takes precisely zero effort to include.

It's an indication just how out of touch EM is with the original games that anyone is having to nitpick it. Would it ruin the new game if it wasn't in there? No. Should it be in there? Absolutely.

That and it's symbolic of binning the wit and charm of the Looking Glass Studio games in favour of an over earnestness that's as borish as it is un-self-aware.

Nailed it in one.
