I was going through some of the E3 interviews on youtube, and I ran into this quote re: Focus. Really good news, I was quite happy to hear them state this, as I was worried that the game would be designed around using Focus:
Quote:
So the way we balance it, we're going to balance it
without using focus. So Focus becomes the player's addition. We're not going to...I think some people think, "Oh we're going to balance towards Focus." No. We're not. You're not allowed to use Focus as a level designer when you're balancing your map. Otherwise, we're going to insinuate that you have to use it. We don't want that. We want that clean experience, where you choose when you want to use it. Not when we want to.
(That's from Daniel Windfeld Schmit, the lead level designer).
Hopefully they'll live up to that, and hey, it'd be really cool if Focus wasn't on by default - not counting on that though!
There's also some cool stuff at the end about lockpicking, seems there will be visual and audio clues in addition to the UI overlay, which might indicate that we could potentially turn off the overlay and just rely on sight and sound. Very cool if so.
Here's the interview:

That is indeed good news. This is the single most encouraging interview I've seen so far.

Just wanted to point out that some of the members on the Eidos forums were invited to play the demo at E3 and they're answering any questions people may have on it. Not a bad opportunity to find out more about the game.

This makes no sense.
If you added the same "gimmicks" to Thief 1 and 2, with the option to turn them off, would that then make them corrupt and ill-conceived?
Can't really compare that, as Thief 1 and 2 weren't designed around/to include those gimmicks. This will be. I was optimistic even with the character change, not super excited about it, but optimistic. Then I found out about no Stephen Russell, but hey! This guy could do a good job too. But the gameplay videos really turned me off. What do you think is more likely? That they just showcased the game in such away to appeal to people who want more action and "casuals" for lack of a better term, or that this is how it'll play out?

I was reading about the disappointment surrounding Ryse, and found a thread discussing what people thought the worst game of E3 was. Many said Thief, and in that discussion, someone posted this video. I did a search to see if this has come up somewhere else and didnt see it. I don't know who these guys are, so what they say may not carry much weight, but I found it especially surprising. Disliking the game is one thing, but these guys suggest that they have been somewhat misled by EM between what they saw at GDC vs what they are playing now.

So, I've been listening to/reading some gameplay impressions, and a couple of things stood out for me...
-- The burning building escape sequence is as bad as people feared it would be and very linear.
-- QTE events are apparently used sparingly to "keep you on your toes".
-- You can blackjack people normally, without those stupid cinematics.

No thank you, we'd rather just stay here and make up insane rumors to get outraged about! HEY GUYS I heard they're replacing Garrett's hands with suction-cups and the main villain will be giant mouse and you have to steal all the cheese from the mouse in the final mission! Typical dumbing down for console audience! :U

I thought I read that it was the EM mods who'd been invited to play. Some almost TTLG responses in reply. :)

To all NuThiefessas ("You don't know that for sure and it's highly unlikely"):
Eidos forums' moderators played the demo and talked to developers. Many bad news that some of you were in denial about:
* It seems that Polish journalist was right, Judith (:p): you can spend money on upgrading weapons, and you can spend XP points on upgrading Garrett (his skills).
*
* Rope arrows require hot spots. (This is the worst news for me).
*
* QTEs are present in the game. The long and linear scripted sequences are present in the game (the burning bridge). Even Eidos moderators were rather unhappy about this part of the demo.
*
* The control over Garrett is taken away from the player during body awareness animations, eg. you can't move until Garrett finishes closing/opening the doors.
*
* The leaning is contextual. You can't lean everywhere (eg. from behind the bush).
Fortunately, there are also many good news. Check (
http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=138032) this thread.
BTW, it's also very nice that EM allowed moderators (fans) to play the demo at E3... But
[Stephane Roy mode on] if I remember correctly, Ion Storm introduced TTLG founders to play the game before its release. I hope that at some point in the future EM will also decide to acknowledge TTLG important role in Thief history
[/Stephane Roy mode off]. :p

That adds little to his ill reputation though :)

XP is for upgrades to Garrett (I speculate it's for things like things like Focus, personally) and the loot can be spent on buying equipment upgrades. Like I said, we didn't really get to see anything that involved XP, so expect more info down the line.
Unfortunately there are no details on that, and I have nothing against simple upgrading system if it's done right (e.g. Dishonored). I hope it's nothing like latest TR for example.
