Spring, if we were to accept Garrett's character at face value, he probably shouldn't even be able to take on one guard without being killed, yet I've never heard anyone referring to him as a trained swordsman before.
I think you're making a mountain out of an old molehill.
EDIT: So yes, even with a sword you were supposed to be at a disadvantage, according to the game's fiction. The reality of the game's mechanics, though, is that you are at a small advantage. This disconnect has always been there, and has never caused a problem before.

Seeing as you won't be playing it, just like jtr, why not just forget about it and get on with your life?
This is the most puzzling part. Why spend so much free time hating on something before you've ever even played it? Seems like it'd be terrible for the nerves and worse for the blood pressure.
At this point in the development not much is going to change regardless.

You can block a sword with your blackjack?? Ridiculous.
You could parry swords with the blackjack in Thief 1 and 2. It's actually better to parry with a shorter object since there's less torsion from the absorbed impact.

You don't see a difference between having a small advantage with a sword, and having a small advantage without any weapons at all?

If you could parry a sword with a leather sack in T1/2 (never tried it myself) then that is also ridiculous.

You can see footsteps when using Focus, too?? What *can't* Focus do.
There appears to even be full-fledged circa-2004 loot glint beacons in effect. Great.

I think it takes a small disconnect that wasn't a problem and turns it into a slightly larger disconnect that isn't a problem. And I think drawing a line between the old and new combat and claiming one is perfectly fine while the other is unacceptable is ... odd.

If we take the existence of a "escape hatch to let us give the player whatever crazy powers we feel like" focus tool as a given, is seeing footsteps a good power to give the player? I think it is.
* It helps stay hidden.
* It tells the player that listening to guards is a good way to stay hidden.
* There is a clear alternative to using the tool (just listening), it helps the player learn to do that, and rewards them for doing it.

I explained this. It's really really simple. Way to pay attention and gripe about a non-point.

I can see water, fire, and broadhead arrows on the right, and that's probably a rope arrow at about 10:00, but what do you think that one next to it is? Doesn't look like moss, gas, or noisemaker.
Err...rocket arrow?

Even when you're never mentioned directly it makes you very angry when people don't subscribe to your opinions. It's hilarious.

Interesting idea. I wouldn't put anything past EM at this point in time.
