Thief will never look as cartoonish as it did in the late 90's because shadows and light simply don't work that way anymore in game engines. I expected this to look A LOT like TDS, just hoping the gameplay's better.
Wait...atomic frob, blue motion trails, and loot glint are NOT cartoonish? Looks like Thief is making it even worse, by having things atomic blue ALL THE TIME, even when you're not frobbing them.
The monochromatic blue I could live with (thought it's still not necessary) but the above were pretty universally panned after TDS was released, weren't they?

But what about the movement? The gameplay? The way Garrett moves about isn't nearly as clumsy as it was in TDS.
It would be hard to be that clumsy. :) It's very hard to tell what the movement is like from the videos...to me it did feel a little clumsy when the character was changing direction or jumping...I still felt like I detected a bit of the TDS "I'm driving a vehicle" feel. I wouldn't stand by that observation though, as it's awfully hard to tell just by watching.

I gotta head out in the next few minutes, so I'm gonna miss out on this. :(
The first thing I saw of interest was they have a sealed copy of Thief: Platinum Edition that I must sneak in and steal. Hopefully I can ghost the mission in real life...
He did say after the trailer though "It's not a sequal, it's not a prequel..." so now I'm confused. What IS it?! Is this left set in the future or something and this thief is trying to emulate the legendary Garrett from the past? They sure as hell keep implying it's the same Garrett. They say he escaped from an orphanage and lived on the streets where he discovered his thieving ability, but there is no mention at all of the Keepers. So I'm almost leaning towards this is a Garrett impersonator from another time period.
He says you don't need to have played the old Thief games, they are separate stories. Though he hints there are nods to the old series. On factions again it seems like while the factions aren't there, there is evidence they WERE there. Again lending credence to my thought that this is in the future.

It's not in the future either. It's a re-imagining. It's like the new Star Trek I guess. The old stuff still exists, but this is an alternate universe.

I'm glad that I stayed up to watch this. Apart from a few features that I'm worried about (I'll get back to those later when I've got more time) I'm actually quite positively surprised! This is pretty much what I would expect from a modern Thief game, and it looks like it could be fun to play too. For the first time I'm really getting excited about the new Thief.

Have to say I am still very excited about this game. Maybe it won't be the perfect game, but its still gonna be a Thief game nevertheless. There are certainly some features that suck but on the other hand some features look promising. And let's not forget that the release is very far away and they still have at least a year to go. I trust they will sort out some of the cheesy things or even remove some of the silly stuff, like the hands always being in front. My main concern at the moment is whether the story will contain any mysteries or dark secrets that was common in previous games. In any case I cannot wait to play this. :)

They just said that you can disable Focus altogether. So you better cheer up you boring sods who don't like awesome slo-mo effects. :grr:
They also said that in the coming months after E3 they'd show some alternate routes though this level. They better! Because I've seen like 4 different demos of this level now and they're all the same! ->turn off water->climb up->look at guy through wall using Focus->pickpocket->pick up Poppy flower->etc. :(

A joke about the missing "h" in "Teef". ;)
And did you see the French bloke (sorry I don't remember his name) a minute or so later, try his hardest to say Th?
I was hoping I'd be seeing something new but from the commentary so far, seems the fog is a WIP. 'Finding it yourself' was mentioned. Focus is completely optional and can be completely disabled - could be a decision to be made at the beginning of the game.
After E3 they'll be showing alternate something or other - maybe entry points?
Multiple choices. Different arrow choices. Garrett not a killing machine. Combat is a bad idea. Health not regenerable (?). Shadow is vital. Gravens - new faction?
The Baron has a dream to propel city into new age and industry but creating tension in doing so.

It remains to be seen if you can tell an area was made with Focus in mind or not. Turning stuff off doesn't mean the gamespaces aren't affected by its existence during designing.

I love you, Vivian. :D
