Seriously - everyone should see that video. We could have written the monologue for it collectively.
It's a great video, but I don't think it 100% applies to what we're seeing here.
To me, EM's Thief is still Thief. It has quite a few concessions to modern game design, but it's not trying to be everything to everyone.
What I would say is going on with Thief 4 would be more akin to tech fashion. Like big beige boxes were popular back in the late 90's, which turned into hulking LED lit bastards in the mid 00's, which has now been superseded by thin, minimalist aluminium devices. The core idea is the same throughout the ages. They're all boxes you plug stuff into. The way it presents itself is completely different. It's fashion.
The same applies to games and UI design. Based on what I've seen on that Gamespot video, the core gameplay elements of Thief look mostly intact (look being the key word here, I can't claim this is 100% true based on what little I've seen), but the way it presents itself is very much anchored in modern design. It's still a stealth based game. EM isn't trying to make another Call of Duty, but it's a more modern take on the old ideas. Since modern design is mostly based around never taking you out of the game (which is both a great and terrible thing depending on how its applied) you're going to be getting a lot more information and UI bling thrown at you. This is probably Thief 4's greatest failing in comparison to the rather minimalist, figure it all out yourself approach the originals took.
But since it's more a layer added on top of Thief, rather than a retooling of the core fundementals of the gameplay, this doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. The extra info overlays are there for people who want it, but hopefully can be turned off so we oldschool types can enjoy Thief the way we always have.

Was worth checking out a few mins early though. That game Murdered looked like a must buy for me if it's PC. Can't wait to see EM's bit though.

Cavalorn, jtr7 - thank you. Looks like food is on hold for a bit. :)
Edit. And Jay too. Sorry - rushing backwards and forwards between the pc and the cooker, I'm missing posts.

I gotta head out in the next few minutes, so I'm gonna miss out on this. :(
