I'm very much looking forward to the full release.
You can see how incomplete the game is, especially AI, animations, and interface. I also get the impression that they still don't have a clue what the story will be, and have crafted a bunch of levels with some simple goals first, and that they're trying to work out what to do with them.

No, I mentioned the rope arrow. It's the one to the left of the rope arrow that I'm wondering about.
Oops, my mistake.:erm: Yeah, I don't know what that is either.

What does look a bit off to me is the vignetting effect that's supposed to be helpful in notifying when you're in shadows or visible. It looks a bit too much, and the flashing might be irritating. But as they said it's a feature for console players that aren't quite as immersed into the sound stage and need visual clues. I'm pretty sure it's a feature that we'll be able to disable.
Completely agree, and I certainly hope it can be turned off. Or at least, toned down or something.

You do not always have to eat a whole egg to make sure the egg is indeed rotten.
All you need to be able to do is to support your argument with facts, you don't have to know everything about the game. Careful extrapolation is fine.
However, as an example, jumping to the conclusion that third person would be everywhere just because of the Stephen Russell decision is one of those frankly insane extrapolations that has since been proven wrong, at least at this stage.
(Even if it had been right, it would have been a case of the stopped clock being right twice a day).

So when do we get to make our decision Renz? What constitutes adequate evidence? When we've bought the game and played through to completion? Does the evidence go both ways, liking and disliking? No one has seen enough to say they like it either, is that right?
This isn't about liking or disliking something. This is about making huge assumptions over very little evidence. Something that, no matter how you try to justify it, is a stupid thing to do.
You want an example? What if the first three screenshots of Thief were all interior shots? No cityscapes. Nothing. Just hallways and rooms. Wouldn't it be stupid to assume that the whole game takes place indoors, and levels like Life of the Party have been nixed entirely?
Yeah. It would be.

Meh. It has icons to indicate where the guards are, and an arrow indicating exactly where you are. I call that radar. :)
...yeah, I apparently wasn't paying much attention during that part, because I thought it was far more subtle than that. Hopefully it's something that can either be turned off, or even better, is removed entirely from the much ballyhooed purist mode.
Having a moving map that marks both your exact location alongside waypoint markets (which is what I believe those red circles are, not guards) takes away too much from the Thief experience.

Tell me you wouldn't think this was Doom 3 or something if I just posted this image out of context.
Actually, it reminds me more of Metal Gear Solid.

So what, all the complaining has been unwarranted hysteria and insane extrapolation? Half of it? One tenth? I'm curious to know what's the figure that you base your claim on.
Fans speculate. That's what they do. You cannot expect someone to calmly and rationally dissect available information when you are dealing with substantial changes to a beloved franchise.
Also, sometimes people make jokes and/or exaggerate things to vent their frustation. When people laugh at "Garrett speaks a lot through his eyes", they do not take it as a factual statement or a literal one.

Renzatic still going on and on about 'very little evidence'. I love this thread!

OK having watched two trailers (are there more?) I think it's about time I give more than single line, borderline trollish comments. So, first I say that with proper restrictions/removals of hud and handholding elements, and with proper stealth play on my end, I think I would enjoy playing this game.
What I like:
- The graphics look nice, definitely thiefy.
- Rope arrows made a comeback
- Water arrows (not dry ice)
- Pickpocketing with actual hands getting actual objects. Same with stealing from containers.
- The voice actor actually does a good job and doesn't sound like an absurd mobster Garrett like he did in that original "Meed Romano" video.
- The stealth system could have been worse.
- The swoop/dash ability doesn't seem too powerful. Seeing as how this Garrett moves slower than Thief 1/2 Garrett I think it evens out.
- They took mine (and others') suggestions and added guard dogs. Though It would have been nice for the dog to be an Englsh Mastiff or some other medieval breed, and not a German Shepherd.
- The crowbar
What I hope I can disable because I hate the friggin' guts of it and I hate the devs for including it:
- That godawful dark edge vignette thing. What is this? It's shit is what it is.
- Copious amounts of console handholding. OBJECTIVE COMPLETE (button extends from the left to the right). Dots above guard's heads. - - Cluttered HUD. If I can't turn these off I won't enjoy the game. I don't need console handholding I am BETTER than the dirty console peasants.
- Focus is just as bad as we feared it would be. V.A.T.S. combat? Loot/pickpocket highlighting like Dishonored's vision mode? Footsteps/objects highlighting? Not thanks.
- Everything that can be used is highlighted as if the player is mentally challenged. Even the rope arrow highlights the target it can latch on to. This is seriously stupid.
- Guards are stunned after you parry with what appears to be a medium sized black dildo. Newsflash: one does not get stunned for two seconds if their strike has been parried. Who thought of this? Probably a scrawny dev who never did anything remotely resembling physical exercise. "Uh oh but Dishonored had this". Yes, and they were idiots to implement it too. Not to mention that everyone in Dishonerd is using decorative cavalry sabres as standard issue melee weapons. I don't even know what these swords in Teef are supposed to be.
- Drawing a bow in melee combat. Garrett draws it so fast that that it should be ridiculous even to people who don't really know anything about archery.
Stuff that is disappointing and bad but there is probably no chance for it to be fixed:
- No Eric Brosious ambient sounds. Nothing even close to trying to resemble them.
- Sound propagation and sound quality in general are sub-par for a Thief game.
- Romano is not Russel, though he sure does try.
- The guards helmets are out of place for the Thief universe and are actually ripped from Dishonored. I hated those helms in Dishonored and I hate them here too. Well at least they weren't wearing top hats...
- Blue fog a-la TDS. Have these people seriously never seen fog? Why is there fog inside the buildings?
- They overdid the hands thing. Half the time I get a feeling that Garrett is running on all fours like a primate or one of those pansy Twilight werewolf things. Less is more people!
- Everything is blue. EVERYTHING. This reeks of TDS. The darknes and light propagation are clearly inferior to the Dark Engine. Also stuff is blurred when it should not be.
- Glowing swords as they strike. Are they perhaps +1 swords or something?

I don't mind XP or new skills in Thief at all.
Once upon a time I wrote a blog piece about creating a new Thief game that would have wider appeal than Thief 1 and 2, by dint of having upgradeable/optional skill and tool choices, whilst still working perfectly well as a hardcore Thief game. The most important part of it, and I still believe this, is having the core Thief gameplay down tight. If everything else is optional there will be no problem.
But some people aren't open minded enough to see it this way.
Garrett's a master teef even the frenchies admit it. Why does he need xp? He should already be maxed out if he's the master teef they say he is. unless he isn't a master teef...
nickie on 12/6/2013 at 09:12
Please don't use the word 'teef' - we don't appreciate it here.
