Turns out it is the rope arrow. Was confirmed through a live demo at the E3 stage show on GameSpot here: (

No, I mentioned the rope arrow. It's the one to the left of the rope arrow that I'm wondering about.

More like a toggleable onscreen map that fills up about half the screen. Personally, I don't think it's that terrible of an idea.
Meh. It has icons to indicate where the guards are, and an arrow indicating exactly where you are. I call that radar. :)

The younger sounding Garrett doesn't bother me nearly as much as the flat sounding guards. I'm not sure if it was a case of bad voice direction or what happened but all the vocals I heard felt kind of lifeless. Then again there could still be portions unfinished in that area too. Hoping those were placeholder voices.

I know it bothers a few people that Garrett jumps down off a bridge and knocks a guard out - but who hasn't done a jumping knockout while playing? It's fun when you're playing as a knockout artist style thief (Not killing anyone, of course) to vary the methods you use to give the guards their unannounced naptimes. I think the mistake they made before (If I remember correctly) was showing him kill the guard Assassin's creed style instead of blackjacking him.
It's not the fact that he jumps down and knocks someone out that bothers me, it's the fact that it wrenches you out of first person. That and it can all be done with the simple press of a button. Falling KOs are much harder to do in T1/2 and much more satisfying.

What are you talking about? They've said you'll be able to ghost it.
Relax dude. I mean ghost the game and have it be worth anything at all. It seems like all their time has been put into rewarding all the parts that are non-ghostable, i.e. the focus, capable of fighting multiple guards, xp for killing, takedown animations. It's an action game with a nominal sneaking mechanic included (but they don't really want you to play that way anways), and not a stealth game with fighting used as a last resort.
I used to even be optimistic for this game, and had faith it would be okay, but now I'm pretty sure I was wrong.

I'd be willing to bet that you'll get just as much xp for ghosting. Likely more + bonus.

That's a fair point. I though it was more about the killing than the perspective switch. Then again I'm not certain the guard was killed in the previous demo so I'll have to watch it again. I guess the switch in perspective bothered me less being that it was someone else playing the game than if it were me directly but I see what you mean. Unfortunately first to third swapping is a trend that I doubt will be going away any time soon.

1) Focus does not preclude ghosting
2) Combat in the earlier gameplay trailer (the only one I've seen yet) was more punishing then combat on normal difficulty in thief
3) we don't know what we'll get xp for, or how the different amounts for different actions will stack up, so we don't know what playstyle xp will reward
4) they have never said they don't want you to play via stealth (if I've interpreted you right)

This is a bit problematic though. I would guess we'll get more points for blackjacking guards. But ghosting? How do you reward points for ghosting?
The most accurate way I know of is to reward ghosting points at the end of the mission, but this is a bit problematic because the player has no feedback during the mission as to how many points he is going to get (but maybe that's not actually a problem because ghosting will be done be more hardcore players anyway).

We didn't press X to do it automatically. We jumped down and actually had to aim for the guard.

Yeah, it might have to be at the end of the mission. The bonus xp for perfect ghosting would definitely be.
I noticed in the gamespot video that there does seem to be checkpoints pretty often. That or he was quick-saving. I suspect it's checkpoints, though. Perhaps they're planning to award bonus ghosting points upon each checkpoint reached? But then you could go back and kill folks and still get the points...(unless they then take them away- which would be cool)
I'm betting they're going to have the player start out with a bank of ghosting points they won't see until the end of the mission. As they kill/KO or are spotted, perhaps more and more become deducted.
