Renz, I'm perfectly happy with the hands when they're actually doing things. Leaning, pickpocketing, opening doors, etc. Just not, as you say, when they're floating in front of you for no reason.
sNeaksieGarrett on 11/6/2013 at 22:15
Yeah, I can agree with that. The problem is not that you can see Garrett's hands, it's the degree to which they are. Having arms and feet just makes you feel more like you're the character and less like a floating camera.

Yeah, despite the really horribly terrible way it was implemented in T3, body awareness isn't a bad thing. Just like some people say around here, when they're playing Thief, they feel like they're becoming Garrett. Being able to look down and see your hands and feet, or seeing yourself grab on a ledge when you're pulling yourself up, twisting a doorknob, flipping a switch, or any other miscellaneous environment interactions, only adds to that experience.
...but, you know, too much of a good thing...

I can see water, fire, and broadhead arrows on the right, and that's probably a rope arrow at about 10:00, but what do you think that one next to it is? Doesn't look like moss, gas, or noisemaker.
Err...rocket arrow?
Edit: And obviously they are in some type of developmental mode, with health=0. So much for a non-scripted demo.
Turns out it is the rope arrow. Was confirmed through a live demo at the E3 stage show on GameSpot here: (

New gameplay live broadcast...
Rope arrows are back! In 1st person! I admit, it looks good.
Garrett also uses crowbar to open closed window. Nice. :)
And... there will be no burricks in the game.

I understand that they needed to reach a broader audience with this, ultimately to make ends meet and justify publication. That said, this is very, very far from my personal cup of Thief tea. I start to think that every console developer is mandated to follow some "Console Player-Ready Rulebook" or such that re-defines movement and display and input and interaction in this... just so generically consolishly strange way. Maybe that's not even a crazy notion; I can imagine Microsoft working with xbox devs to say "This is what works. Do it."
I'm sad to say this gameplay looks less like Thief than I even pessimistically expected. TDS is more Thief than this, which is somehow mindboggling.
Thanks go out to the Thief and TDM editing communities for all that they continue to do.

There's a very slim chance to me that if you strip away the focus and all the other stuff, there might be a chance to ghost the game. Which might make it at least playable on the level of Thief 2. Except if the only way to get XP is by doing non-ghost things, and if you need the XP to do anything worthwhile in the game.
But probably won't ever get around to playing it anyways.

They've already stated that it's very possible to ghost through a mission. You could probably go through the entire game without killing anyone.
And the XP thing? It'll probably be set up like DX:HR. You get awarded no matter how you play it. Killing gives you XP, as does sneaking through an entire mission. And if it's like DX, you'll end up with a helluva lot more points than you would going on a bloodbath kill spree.
...but XP in Thief. Uggghh.

What are you talking about? They've said you'll be able to ghost it.
