It ain't Thief if the masses are accustomed to it. The masses rejected and continue to reject Thief, and now these devs are taking Thief "back" to the masses LGS shunned. Revenge is sweet.
LGS didn't shun the masses, and the masses didn't reject Thief, the Thief series was, actually, pretty successful commercially speaking. And, if we all remember, only the Expert difficulty was non lethal, you could go berserk on Normal and Hard, just as you can in Dishonored, which i'm sure many casual Thief purchaser actually did at the time.:P

I can see water, fire, and broadhead arrows on the right, and that's probably a rope arrow at about 10:00, but what do you think that one next to it is? Doesn't look like moss, gas, or noisemaker.
Err...rocket arrow?
Edit: And obviously they are in some type of developmental mode, with health=0. So much for a non-scripted demo.
The UI looks very amateurish btw. I hope it's not the final version, and the visibility border takes up way too much screen space, I hope it can be toned down. Now I'd like to see direct gameplay in HD, without mr. Doritos and CNN newsfeed.

Having watched that footage, I don't know how anyone could suggest this game does not have Thief's DNA. It is very obviously a Thief game. It is also very obvious that the design, aesthetics and game mechanics have been somewhat influenced by the big successes in gaming over the past decade. This is inevitable and I would suggest it is unrealistic to expect a game from the 90s to the be ported into the next gen of consoles without changes that clearly distinguish it as a game from the 2010s (or whatever the hell we're calling this decade).
It does look and feel like Thief though, from what I saw.
Obvious gripes are WTF HEADSHOT XP and MIST-SURROUND-O-VISION, but not worth losing your shit over. Early days.

Okay. You might wanna go check the numbers on each point you made and get back to me.

Worse then I was expecting, and I was expecting something rather bad. I'll wait and see what can be disabled, but I'm not hopeful. An absolute never buy if it plays like whats seen in the video.
Too bad games have become so locked down to mods.

Besides that, the only thing that bothers me is the console-ish hud (with constantly jumping elements from one place of the screen to another and that horrible shadowy view when you are hidden... really intrusive), but maybe there will be some way to turn it off, Dishonored style. If not, i trust some talented modders will make things right and reinsert the good old light gem back.
If EM have not coded a lightgem, then there will never be a light gem. They have no plans for modding tools because they want their vision to remain intact. Even with an SDK, which grants access to limited parts of the engine, modding a light gem would be difficult without access to specific parts of the code.

After they said there was a three-stage (I can't remember how it was worded exactly, sorry!) light gem along with the Shroud, I've been waiting to see it. Where did they keep getting off telling us we will really like their design choices and they feel natural and an extension of us?

Just to put things in perspective when compared to what the "irreductible five" have to say, or to the generally positive views that Thief: Deadly Shadows garnered from regular gamers when it was first shown, the reaction of non-hardcore Thief players or non-Thief players on other forums to this gameplay walkthrough is overwhelmingly negative.

TDS had a horrible effect we never recovered from. T4 is proving to be the kill shot.
You did not recover from it. I am pretty sure that I am not the only one who did not hate it. Of course the majority seems to dislike it as well since it wasn't the same game as before. I admit it had some serious flaws such as loading screens and silly ragdoll but it had a very good story and an amazing atmosphere. If you could not enjoy it then that is your personal problem. T3 was not as good as the prequels but it was a fairly good game, and I still consider it one of my favorite games of all time.
You seem to think T4 will suck as well, even though you know almost nothing about it. You also said you won't buy it. Why do you still care then? Go play some T2 FMs and that's it.
jtr7 on 11/6/2013 at 12:33
I'm not talking about TDS, I'm talking about the effect on the forum. No, of course you are not alone. I'm talking about the polarized opinion. TDS was a good game, but it presented too many problems for just talking about the Thief universe and discussion. It fractured the community forever. T4 will drive a stake in it.
You have no idea what's going on, even when I explain it. I can't help you. Thief 4 will suck for me as a player and as a forum member, even if it's a great game, for reasons you completely skipped over.
I don't play FMs for some of the same reasons. Preferences and tastes have nothing to do with it. I am waiting for this game to be presented as a Thief game, and it hasn't been presented as a Thief game, yet. The pile of things I do not like, hate, am bored to death of, or am simply not compatible with, all to varying degrees, are being shown off in this new game's media, and the list of things I love Thief for are hardly present. There's hardly anything new here, but people are acting like it's unique somehow. Brand blindness?
Do I say you love this game, really like it, even though you know "almost nothing" about it and have not played it? No. If you do, though, you are a hypocrite. I owe EM nothing, but you think I do.
