I'd hate to admit this, but I'm more excited for MGS5 right now. At least Kojima seems to be moving forward.

As far as I'm concerned they can go ahead and add new elements as long as they are fun to use and don't break character.
Aren't XP points alone breaking the character?
I skimmed through various internet forums (including Polish ones) and I didn't notice even one truly enthusiastic reaction to this "gameplay". It's always "I hope we can disable this or that" and "I am certain that combat/AI/HUD/animations etc. that we've seen are just a placeholder".
I was rather optimistic about Thief 4. I really liked the screenshots. But right now the gameplay looks (and probably feels) terrible. Compared to other "gameplays" presented at E3 (The Division!) it looks like a product in some early stage of development. This game should not be released in 2014. It needs a lot of work and testing. One of the most important elements in Thief game, AI, is still wrapped in swaddling clothes.
I am a huge fan of body awareness, yet even this element of gameplay just does not feel right. The leaning, for example, is "glued". The hand does not grab the item while pickpocketing. Etc. And there are examples of great body awareness in some E3 presentations that we can watch right now.
I am more and more convinced that EM team does not know what kind of game they want to deliver. They are confusing Thief with other (perhaps even great) games. But I am still hoping for some interesting gameplay presentation today...

As a veteran Thief player, i must say i am rather excited by the gameplay video. The atmosphere is Thief, the map seems pretty large with lots of ways to get inside the house and the sneaking was pretty awesome. Yes, there are some unneeded ninja elements but as long as they don't force us to use them i couldn't care less. The third person bits (when you take out the guard) are relatively short and don't seem overused, form what i saw they don't break the immersion. I liked the body awareness too, with the exception of the hands being constantly in your face when you crouch.... that is annoying, i feel like an alien from the AVP series....
Besides that, the only thing that bothers me is the console-ish hud (with constantly jumping elements from one place of the screen to another and that horrible shadowy view when you are hidden... really intrusive), but maybe there will be some way to turn it off, Dishonored style. If not, i trust some talented modders will make things right and reinsert the good old light gem back.
As for the story, the exposition doesn't seem as bad as i originally thought. It has potential, i only hope that they take it into the right direction and we don't end up with some boring cliche, thief always had a very original story. As a side note, I think there will be some magic elements to it, he said something about the new focus system being justified by the story, which makes me think about magic the same way Dishonored justified it.
We must respect the fact that Thief is an old game, and as much as we love it, it's time is gone. If this reboot manages to stay true to the core elements of the series and give us the opportunity to play it while avoiding the not-so-hot new elements and, at the same time, sparking the interest of new players, i will be very happy:) The same thing happened to Deus Ex: HR which was really a great game.

Except that more modern games are inspired by Thief than ever.
Skyrim and Dishonored, anyone?
Instead, Thief is abandoning the very elements that those games are ripping off. And deciding to rip
them off instead. It's utterly bizarre. Like The Beatles getting self-conscious and plagiarizing the Monkees or something.

Looks like Thief, what I can say, I like this (even corner fog is OK for now)... Should mute my speaker, hope also there is in-game sound to listen... Think they demo-ed direct combat to show that it is nearly useless, right? And hands, of course, very annoying, expected tremor starts or Garrett applauds:) XP aspect is funny too, think it would be the same fail as with "factions" in Shadows

You're right, but Thief has a very good reason for ripping Dishonored off. Dishonored did something awesome, that i never thought anyone would try: It took core Thief elements and transformed them so that they fit in modern, critically acclaimed game while appealing to the current mass audience and, at the same time, allowed us, old school players, to go crazy Thief style!:D
The devs realized that Dishonored basically modernized Thief and they're ripping off the already modernized Thief elements which clearly work in today's context and with which the audience is already accustomed to.

Crazy blink style you mean. Having magic to teleport around and stop time, as well as unrestricted access to really powerful tools like the sleep darts (remember how precious gas arrows were in T1/2? Ranged knock-outs must be very sparse in a stealth game), not to mention the laughable "hide behind a pile of planks" stealth system made it qute hard to go all crazy Thief style on it. I did enjoy the game, but it's not Thief and I think they were too chicken to make it Thief like in earnest.

It ain't Thief if the masses are accustomed to it. The masses rejected and continue to reject Thief, and now these devs are taking Thief "back" to the masses LGS shunned. Revenge is sweet.

No one forced you to use those:) You could play it with minimal blink usage, like i did. Except for the hide-behind-the-planks stealth system which was, indeed, stupid, but the Thief devs had the decency to not copy this faulty system:P
Also, Dishonored never claimed to be Thief, but it is always mentioned in relationship to it because, even with all the magic and silly stealth system, it is as close as any game got to a Thief atmosphere and gameplay since Thief 3 (not counting thief 2x, the dark mod and thief fms, obviously, i'm referring to stand alone games).
