The Dishonored comparisons are no longer primarily cosmetic.
Thief 4 sports the same pickpocketing system, the same absence of a viable sound-based feedback system, the same wonky movement, the same quick-dash moves, the same one-button takedowns, the same x-ray sonar vision, the same binary stealth, what looks to be a similarly-broken lean function...
It's heartbreaking, really.
I can roll with some changes, even major ones, but Dishonored already exists. And not all of us cared for it.

All these "features" are becoming the norm. How was anything in that demo any different than any other AAA action title you've seen recently? Did anything look truly unique and groundbreaking?
:p
There is a New game called WatchDogs that looks to be completely groundbreaking. You are in the city of chigago and the game is open based so you can finish missions by using all the survelliance cameras, etc. the city has. In other words....it actually LOOKS like a game that is not "Dumbed Down". It looks like you can actually USE YOUR BRAIN on that one. I do not see why the new thief game had to go this route, it is dissapointing to those of us who have been playing the original for years.
But to someone who has never played thief ...why didn't they just make it more like call of duty and give garrett a machine gun? From the looks of the gameplay and trailer, that is pretty much all he needs, maybe a bazooka or grenade if he wants to have that "bull in a china shop" look!
Like I said this will be a "bargain bin" purchase for me. Now I LOVE the new GTA V and will probably wait for the PC version so I can mod it...it is nothing like Thief, but it was never supposed to be!
This NEW Thief is simply a thumb at the nose of it's older fans and to me, I can live without it! And I am also glad Stephen Russell is not in this piece of junk game.
By the way...IGN gave it a zzzzzzzz....rating meaning it put them to sleep! LOL!

Did we look at the same Watch_Dogs?
It's true we were told the game would be brilliant and deep and innovative, but what we saw today was more like Sleeping_Dogs: A fairly standard GTA clone with a thoroughly linear narrative and some cell phone powers you select from a wheel menu. Nothing to pen a diary entry over.

Thiaf.
It's "stealth" because he hides when he's not doing the usual everything else. It's Thief 'cause he puts out torches with a special arrow, and there are familiar pronouns. Who the hell had the game controller during the demo? Show us why this game is different than the usual!

That may be YOUR OPINION, it it certianly NOT MINE!
And NO I do not think it is a GTA clone. Most people like you make that mistake because you can steal vehicles. But I do not know of any GTA game where you can hack into the city survalliance equipment.
I think you are dead wrong period.
Your post is nothing to pen an entry over either.

B-but he has JAZZ HANDS!
That's something.

Can you believe they think we will become so immersed that his hands will feel like our own? Astounding.
Captain Spandex on 11/6/2013 at 08:53
They're certainly immersed in something...

What is Thief to you?
Infiltrating huge buildings covertly, having a feeling of sneaking around in places I'm not supposed to be, unraveling smaller sideplots about the inhabitants of the castles I'm sneaking around in while a larger plot unfolds in the background. Planning my approach from the shadows, forming a plan and the executing it. The challenge of staying undetected while I perform my objectives, and having to improvise when I slip up.

I'm bothered more by the schismatic changes in the forums. TDS had a horrible effect we never recovered from. T4 is proving to be the kill shot.
Why? Because people disagree with each other? Dude, what would we
talk about if we all agreed with eachother? This thread would start with: This looks cool/horrible! And then 3 pages of people saying "I agree."?
Being someone who isn't even going to play the game, but whose sole reason for coming to this forum is for the fun of arguing with the people who will, and enjoying the feeling of camraderie with the people who won't, I'd think that you jtr7, if anyone, should see why a schism is no bad thing. It's what keeps this forum alive.

OK, but why? None of these features were in any of the previous Thief games.
It's a reboot. As far as I'm concerned they can go ahead and add new elements as long as they are fun to use and don't break character. I see focus and dash as just extensions of Garrett's reflexes and agility.
jtr7 on 11/6/2013 at 08:55
Heh heh heh.
Well, he is getting more touchy-feely the more we learn about him.
Oh man, henke, that's quite an understatement. I see the humor, but who gives a damn about agreement? Discussion needs varied views. Polarization sucks and gets nowhere. My favorite discussions here have been inventive and surprising, not everyone saying "I agree." WTF, man? It just shows how utterly out of touch my critics are.
They have broken character. I don't recognize this guy or his motives. There are taffheads who think Garret was not even a character, so again, the nebulous comments are pretty useless. The more they reinvent, the less they should claim "It's Thief!"
Having carte blanche to reinvent defeats the purpose of reviving the franchise. They aren't reviving, they are starting over, and leaving people like me and others behind by embracing many commonalities original Thief purposely avoided and shifted away from.
And how is your description of Thief not applicable to many other games available? The only twist in that recipe is the word "castle".
