It took me about 28 hours to play TDP - I remember because I didn't realize until hour 25 that I'd spent an entire day playing it, and figured what the hell, I may as well finish it. That was on Easy, so needless to say I spent many happy hours afterwards playing it on Expert, ghosting, getting 100% loot, etc.

When developers announce gameplay will be 10 hours long, that implies normal gameplay by average dumb console peasant.
It means 5 hours long by normal intelligent PC gamer, and this means the game will be dumbed down to coddle to console audience, and it will be heavily scripted.
Games that take 10 hours are usually script fests, Thief is exploration type of game, that indicates to me developers missed the boat.

That's a lot of ridiculous inferencing from a single number off a magazine mixed in with a lovely bunch of assumptions that may or may not be true.
Wait for until Deus Ex: HR releases, and if it is indeed a dumbed-down console kiddies game with no exploration or alternate route potential, then you'd have a base for half of your little screed to stand on.

No developer announced that Thief 4's gameplay would be only 10 hours long. That's the gameplay length Gamestar editors claimed it would have. Here's a literal translation of the sentences in question:
Regarding a plan the reporters spotted in the studio: "Immediately, Stéphane D'Astous explains to us that teams for design, graphics, sound and programming use this plan to coordinate their work and to change, expand or shorten the story if necessary. We memorize: According to plan, the next Thief game offers currently about 10 hours of gameplay"
So you see. No developer ever actually said anything about how long the gameplay would be. On the contrary. Stephane D'Astous made perfectly clear that the storyline isn't even finished right now and that it may very well expand. The reporters themselves made up that imaginary 10 hours without explaining how they actually calculated that number. I doubt that the plan in question had the expected gameplay length listed for each mission.

It says that the actual plans are for a 10 hours-story, not that at this time they have already 10 hours of gameplay.
Actually, it doesn't say anything about the storyline itself. It's all about the gameplay.
Someone already said it: 10h just for a storyline is usually only done in RPGs and even that would be a massive one. I doubt anyone could name a game that offers 10+ hours worth of cutscenes.

10 hours of game play is still very short for a single-player game if that is to be believed. If you look at the current gaming market, most games that only offer 10-hours of single-player gameplay typically come out with some type of multiplayer component as well.
But then again it could be a false report or the 10-hour gameplay is for somebody rushing through the game and not taking in all there is to see and do. There haven't been any reports that Thief 4 will have multiplayer, but I personally would hope they don't go that route and instead spend their development type developing a rock solid single player experience that hasn't been dumbed down for console split screen matches.

Isn't HR being done by completely different studio?

Indeed. It's just two teams in one studio, on separate floors of the building.

So every jRPG you say? I have a DVD containing all cutscenes of Final Fantasy X and its play time is less than 8 hours. Same goes for X-2. So much for your generalization...
