Hi ttlg, I'm new to the forums and was wondering if some of you might be able to help me with Thief 3.
The whole series has always been a big technical problem for me, and it's too bad, because the games are really great. I first played Thief 1 kind of late, and I already had a dual core system. The game worked okay, but it crashed every 10-15 minutes. Somehow, I played through the whole game anyway. After that, I couldn't get Thief 2 to run at all, until a few years later, when I found the complete patch on this forum. The game worked perfectly and never crashed (thanks for that patch, by the way!). And finally, a few months ago, I decided to download the third game on Steam, and I figured that this game, much more recent than the other two, shouldn't be a problem.
So I managed to get around the looping intro by setting affinity to only one of the cores, but I couldn't beat the tutorial mission since the game crashes every couple of seconds (sometimes around 60 seconds, but usually, around 5 seconds). And after not finding much info online, I gave up, but today, I thought I'd try again by asking you guys for help. I tried running the game again this morning, but I couldn't even set affinity to one core to skip the intro ("Access is denied," says the computer). Things are not looking good.
Anything I should try? Is there any "complete patch" in the works, like the one for Thief 2? Or is there pretty much no hope? By the way, I have Windows 7 and a Radeon HD 5750.
Thanks in advance for the help! :)

I think a lot of people around here will agree that Thief 3 is unplayable.

Welcome to the forum! If you haven't already, check out the (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75031) Thief Series FAQ in this same forum, which has a section on Thief 3 technical issues. You can also try posting in or searching the (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=153) Legacy Gaming Technical Help forum here at TTLG, where these types of problems often come up. Another thing to try with Windows 7 when you get those "access denied" errors is to right-click on the game executable (t3main.exe) and select 'Run as administrator'.

Try disabling visual themes and Desktop composition.

:wot: Okay, that was it? You guys seriously rock, the game works perfectly now. I know that for a lot of people, the game crashes after the tutorial, but I beat the mission after that, so everything seems fine.
Brethren: Haha, yeah, so I hear, but so far, the game doesn't seem so bad to me. I'm not liking that the levels are divided into different "areas" though. I'm getting some Deus Ex 2 flashbacks, here.
Anyway, many thanks! :)

The divided areas takes some getting used to, but I think on the whole the game has some cracking levels that hold there own against TDP and TG - being careful on the spoiler alert there!

Just yesterday I thought how long it would take...

Deadly Shadow unplayable? Cool!
Count your blessings and just walk on. :)

Geez, you would think if they're still going to sell that game, they could at least have the decency to *fix* the bugs like the multicore crashes. "Support" means we're expected to pay for the game multiple times if our new PC lacks CD drives, not that they're obligated to provide a fully-functional product on a modern system for the average Joe out of the "box".
