Thief 3 slow loading times

I've finally managed to install Thief Deadly Shadows again (Steam version with the latest Sneaky Upgrade). All seems to be working amazingly well. I tried to get it to run several times over the years since I moved off XP but always ran into issues. Sneaky Upgrade is amazing, it was so easy to install and just about everything is fixed! It looks and runs even better than I remember.

EXCEPT...

Every loading screen takes almost 2 minutes. Takes 2 minutes to load into the main menu, 2 minutes to load a savegame, 2 minutes any time I have to go through blue fog. It is installed on a HDD not an SSD but all my other more modern games load off the same drive in a flash. I know this has always had pretty long load times but I'd be happy if I only had to wait 30 seconds. As it is, I've got time to play other games on my phone while I wait.

Is this normal?

Try disabling the VSync.

Definitely not normal. :eww: The menu should load in a couple of seconds.

During those 2 minutes, do you see the loading screen and progress bar? Or a black screen for most of the time?

Try this:

* Disable the Collective Texture Pack if you enabled it. (It will increase loading times but not that much)
* On the tweaker's Display page, see if switching to windowed mode makes a difference.
* On the Troubleshooting page, see if changing any of the options "Direct load", "Multicore fix" or "Suspend the progress bar" makes a difference
* After a run where the problem was present, go to the Thief 3 Sneaky Upgrade program group in the start menu, open the game log and post its content here (in code tags (# icon) please!)

Better also post your PC hardware and Windows version.

Edit: Yeah, also try disabling vsync. :) But also try the other stuff, because it ought to work with vsync enabled.

Something is wrong here indeed. It takes like 6 seconds to launch the game main menu. Loading a quicksave takes 20 seconds, starting a new game takes 15, this is with Thief 3 Gold, texture packs and Vsync enabled.

Thanks for the suggestions! Can't believe how much community there still is for a game that's been out for 14 years!

Unfortunately still taking forever to load. :(

I have now tried all of these, and tried running with every combination of boxes ticked/unticked in the tweaker. I'm not sure if something has changed since the 2 minute load times I was getting previously, but all my load times today were 54 seconds exactly (wtf?) regardless what settings I tried. Every single time, regardless what map I load. I tried running TDS vanilla with no mods and it was the same so I reckon it's not an issue with the tweaker.

The loading screen shows as expected, the loading bar zips along to the end in about 16 seconds, the screen brightness changes as if the in-game gamma has kicked in, and then it sits there unchanging for the rest of the time. I seem to remember the flavour text used to show different quotes while it loaded, but it just shows one quote as if the screen is frozen.

A few more suggestions:

* Hopefully obvious, but: if you normally just suspend your PC, then do a proper reboot
* Try disabling AV. There's been some reports of AV interfering with the game starting up (although not to the menu, IIRC)
* Close down Steam. The SU-patched game can run without it
* Looks like you have an extended desktop. Try it with just one display connected

Btw. the log file reports your Windows 10 build as 10240, which is the first version. Is this correct? Nothing else in the log file stands out.

Edit: Can you post a screenshot showing the loading screen in its frozen state?

I leave my PC running 24/7, didn't even think to try rebooting. It's blazing fast now. I'm off to hide in a dark corner in shame. :laff:

Another update for future Googlers... I tracked it down. It's Adobe Illustrator. And not all the time - just when I've got enough work open in Illustrator that it has started to lag. Closing Illustrator isn't enough, a full reboot is necessary. Heck knows why.
