Well, does it mean I can remove the scripts from all the door glyphs? The enter mission properties haven't been changed since you discovered that removing the files alone does the trick, however, I still have the "play bik file" scripts in place when you frob the door glyphs all over the City.
snobel on 23/1/2015 at 10:57
If that's how they're triggered, then yes - no map changes wrt. the originals are necessary. As long as the files are present and a certain SU option is set, then they'll play.
The one change you should keep is the KeeperIntro move from before the Castle briefing to afterwards, to avoid having two videos playing back to back.
Beleg Cúthalion on 23/1/2015 at 19:07
OK, if the Castle works right now, I won't change anything and only remove the additional scripts from the City maps. I guess you're doing the museum a/b distinction already?
snobel on 23/1/2015 at 20:28
Well, it's derived from the name of the text briefing (Museum.sch/MuseumAlt.sch) that is about to be displayed on the New Mission screen, so as long as that name is correct, the video briefing will be correct as well.

I fiddled around with the RAD Game Tools and below are some versions of the first briefing using various compression rates.

It's probably possible to shave some more MBs off without losing that much quality. Not sure about the 640x360 dimensions, they'll get stretched on larger monitors and the text of the quotes rapidly becomes a pixelated mess.

I'm voting for 720p, it looks good even with low data rate. 350 MBs of briefing videos shouldn't be that much of a problem these days. I'd think about removing the noise effect though. It always messes up the compression, no matter how good the algorithm is.

If everybody agrees on the dimensions I will prepare a version without the noise, it does indeed more harm than good.
snobel mentioned H.264 support, I believe. Should that be included in later builds of the Sneaky Upgrade I think we need to switch to MPEG, as the size versus quality ratio is much better. The video is too pale though, but that might be fixed by using another compression program or cranking up the image adjustments.

Agreed, the 720p medium data rate is only slightly better with an extra 20MB. MPEG with 720p and medium data rate looks even better, except for the slight stutter. But in principle we're on the right track. The cleaned-up maps have been sent to snobel yesterday so he can do a first test with the actual videos.

At what timestamp do you see the stutter? Is it when the panned fades start? I'll see if I can upload BIK and MPEG versions of the briefings without noise this weekend.

Of those, 1280x720 low is definitely the best compromise. Still, at that size they're going to triple the size of the fat SU. For comparison, here's a (
https://copy.com/kB2XOAnH7jeuYT4X) 854x480 version, re-encoded from the 720p youtube version using Handbrake (high profile, quality 23, medium denoising). It's ~8 MB.
Edit: @mensch: Sorry, I missed your own examples above.
I think the videos will have to be a separate download until the ffmpeg playback is ready. (In hindsight the fat SU was a bad idea - instead the tweaker should become more of a mod manager so that the mods can be made available for download individually.)

If it's mainly in the dark areas it may be YUV-style colourspace confusion. (Some have black at 0, some at 16.) Even though they build on the same libraries, ffplay gets it wrong while vlc gets it right:
