Due to being an idiot, I recently screwed up my graphics drivers and had to do a system restore. Fortunately that took care of the problem, but now I think it may have messed up something with Thief2 because it won't start! Thief 1 is fine, but every time I try to start up Thief 2 I get the windows message "Thief 2 has encountered a problem and needs to close." I uninstalled it and reinstalled it--I even uninstalled and reinstalled darkloader, but that hasn't helped. I have no idea what the problem could be.
EDIT: Sorry, I forgot to mention my OS is Windows XP

try reinstalling directx, system restore likes to mess it up..actually,system restore likes to mess up almost anything that can be messed up,but that's another story.

I've tried that and it hasn't worked.

Aw man. . . :(
Yes, but are you sure there's no other way?

there should be a way to fix it without reinstalling the os,the question is,is it worth the time (and frustration)?

Ok, I've just checked the other games I have installed on my computer and it seems that System Restore has fucked with them too in some way, namely the visuals. I'm pretty sure I need to update my video drivers, but it was doing just that that caused the massive screwup in the first place. I really don't know anything about updating or installing video drivers. :(

What brand of video card do you have, and what kind of 'screwup' did updating the drivers cause?

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT
What happened was I was trying to update my video drivers to improve the performance of a game demo I was trying out. I went to the forum for help. No one would really explain anything in-depth, but just gave me a link to something that I downloaded. I really didn't know what to expect and thought what I downloaded was just some driver-searching program so I tried to uninstall it. Turns out, it was the actual drivers themselves, apparently, and uninstalling them screwed up my system. The people at the gaming forum basically told me I was an idiot and that it was my fault, and sure I was the one that screwed it up, but that could have been avoided if they had freaking
told me what to do and what to expect!Geez, you don't just throw someone who barely knows how to drive behind a wheel and say "Here, just turn the key and push on the gas pedal" and then walk away and NOT expect them to crash and burn. . . . .no, I'm not bitter about it, not at all. :grr:
Anyway, System Restore fixed my graphics card, but screwed with the graphics settings in all of my games somehow. I think I may have to update my drivers again, but hopefully with help from a friend, the last incident can be avoided this time.
