Maybe someone can explain what it's really for. It is 2.53 MBs, after all.:wot:
It's just main game executable file in encrypted form. The other smaller executable is just launcher for decrypter subsystem (in Thief 2 case SafeDisc).
Fearless Son on 2/12/2008 at 11:13
In that case, why does the demo not have one? If that really were the main executable, then it would also be necessary in the demo.
Still, its absence explains why I cannot get it to work. I either have to wait for my replacement CD to arrive, or have someone send it to me. And even when the CD does get here, the first thing I intend to do is copy it to the hard drive. No way is that thing going to escape me again.

Why would the demo have it? The demo can be downloaded, it never needs a CD. That's probably why it does not have thief2.icd
The Brain on 2/12/2008 at 16:16
In those days when Thief 2 was published, quite few game demos did have copy protection implemented into them so that is why there is no .icd file in Thief 2 demo.
You might want to try (
http://thief-thecircle.com/download.asp?fid=423) Thief 2 Premier Patch. It does include full cd protection free .exe file.

Well, if what The Brain said is true:

Then that .ICD file would be required for any startup of the engine.

Look right above your post. He just said that demos didn't have .icd. So I don't know what you are trying to prove. As far as the FULL version of thief 2, I have no idea. If what the Brain says is true, it has to do with SafeDisc protection, which also has to do with your thief 2 installation having CD checks. HOWEVER, the demo doesn't have a CD check (nor does it need one), so obviously it does not have an ICD file. I admit I don't know shit about ICD files, but it seems logical.
 Actually, you may want to try a thief 2 executable that does not have copy protection, and thus would not need the ICD, am I correct?
I'm sending you a PM.
Also, you did not answer my questions (

Oh, sorry. Yes, Thief 2 did work on the old machine.
As a more general update, after some file fiddling (with appropriate backups made first) my copy of Thief 2 seems to start up just fine. Gives absolutely no issues and even the cutscenes play perfectly. I guess it really was the lack of a CD that was screwing it up.
Unfortunately, now T2X is demanding a CD. Let me see if I can work that a little...
sNeaksieGarrett on 3/12/2008 at 02:37
You need to patch T2X as well.
Interesting though. In theory, if your game would not start up (and I'm suprised you didnt' get a "please insert the thief 2 CD into the CD Rom drive") it is because you did not have the CD - however, your lack of an ICD file suggests that your version of thief did not require a CD. Don't quote me on that though, it's only a hunch. I seriously don't know squat about ICD, but maybe Brain could explain.
Anyway, one bit of caution. Unless the devs have cut us some slack, or just aren't catching it, mentioning no cd on these forums is not really allowed.
Oh, and it appears that it was your .exe that was the problem, but I'm curious what would have happened if you had just tried my previous suggestion of adding skip_starting_checks to your cam.cfg instead.
Fearless Son on 3/12/2008 at 03:11
My apologies. I can post a copy of my Amazon.com email reciept, if that would be sufficient, but I doubt than anyone would insist.
I did update the darkinst.cfg file in my T2X directory, and it did seem to start the application. However, now it goes to a blank screen then quits to the desktop with a standard error message. I think that maybe I need to do some more video fixes on this one.

It's the discussion and posting of links or how to do it that's not acceptable. You may own a copy, but someone else who has an illegal copy can use the info you or someone else provides, here. Years from now, too.
Really, keep it private and out of the public and web-searchable TTLG forums. In the rare case that someone from Eidos found it, TTLG would get the brunt of the wrist slap (ideally, it would only be a cease & desist demand, which TTLG will absolutely comply with). It's out of respect to these forums we still encourage keeping quiet about it. You'll notice that I pushed for other options for you. I knew it was only a matter of time before some naive, or disrespecting, or arrogant person just told you anyway.
I don't know why some posts have resulted in or contributed to outright bannings of individuals--including KoMaG (since returned)--while other posts seem to have been ignored completely. I know that arrogance and disrespect are pretty much guarantees if a mod or admin sees it.
I still suggest waiting for your new CDs, and doing a new clean install before fudging with the files.
