I am about ready to give up here. I played Thief perfectly on my XP. Then the hard drive died, so I bought a new computer with Windows 7 Premium. Thief2 will not run. Thief3 seems to work, though. I was able to get through the training mission. Here is what I have tried.
I have searched and searched. Found Salvage's instructions for the nonpermanent and the permanent multiprocessor/hyperthreading fix. Downloaded imagecfg. When I tried the nonpermanent fix, Windows would not allow me to change the affinity. Access denied. When I tried the permanent fix, I created the processor.bat file. The instructions say to put quotes around it, but Windows would not allow that either. When I double click it as the instructions say, it just opens up for editing. Also, there does not seem to be a Windows\system32\dllcache folder, so I unzipped imagecfg to only Windows\system32.
Searched some more, and found the ddfix. Downloaded that, and unzipped it. Also downloaded the prepatched thief2.exe, and unzipped that. Now when I try to start T2 in garrettloader 1.41, it says that I do not have directx version 7 or later. But I do. I have directx 11. Does the computer see the ones as less than 7? Surely this is an old problem that has been fixed, but I could not find anything. I keep hitting road blocks. If I buy the thief games from Steam, which I would rather not do, they would probably work on Windows 7 premium, right?
Another question: If I buy the Thief games from Steam, will I be able to run FMs?
Does anyone have any suggestions? I miss the Thief series, especially T2. Thanks for any help.

I will try that. Thank you. I appreciate it.

Welcome, and good luck. :cheeky:

Oh, well. I tried. It still doesn't work. Thanks anyway.
I can play the intro, and get to the menu. As soon as a mission starts, the game locks up with a black screen. Can't even start the mission.
My computer is a 64 bit. Does that matter?
One thing I noticed is that in the video menu, there is nothing showing for the hardware driver. I don't remember if anythng was there before, but shouldn't there be? Also, my computer has 6 cores. Does that matter?
thanks anyway, Yandros.

Could this be a clue?
I have found that I can start the mission, but all I get is audio while the video stays on the menu. As soon as I move my mouse, the game crashes. Could that mean anything?

I wish I could help in more detail. I do not think the cores are problem, since I play T2 on a Win 7 64- bit, laptop with 8 cores. I did the painful installation (at the main menu I had sound, but dark screen) 7 months ago, with a D:\setup -lgntforce from command prompt, got patch and DDFix. I followed the instructions on various threads, including the one "how to make Thief 2 run on a modern computer" and I have patched it to 1.18. I have Sold Out version.
Will keep fingers crossed to make it work. :thumb:

try updating your video drivers, and make sure you are not forcing FSAA via the control center. reinstall the game, use tafferpatcher (this is the only thing you'll ever need) and use ddfix 1.5.5 instead of the latest one.

Thanks to all who tried to help.
I never could get T2 to work (the one I bought as soon as T2 came out). But I found another one that I forgot that I had. On the case, it says that it was made for XP. I forgot that I bought it some time after XP came out. I tried that one yesterday, and it still would not work. So I tried your suggestions (tafferpatcher), and that made all of the difference. T2 now works perfectly. I could not have gotten it to work without you guys. I am happily playing again, and my addiction is satisfied :^) , and so thank you very much. Now I won't have to go through withdrawal :^) .
