So I got movies working, I'm running it on one processor, I stopped it from giving me the texture error by removing the semicolon from the texture line in the user.cfg, and everything works except for the actual game.
When I start a new game, as soon as I click "continue" to begin the mission, the game goes to a black screen and stays there.
I noticed that the texture fix doesn't work for nvidia 9x.xx drivers, so I go and do a full uninstall of my 9x.xx driver and install an 8x.xx series driver just so I could play my precious Thief 2! But even then, the problem persists.
Any ideas? I've fooled around with compatibility mode and still no luck.

Just to be specific, the driver I tried was 84.56.

P4 3.0 GHz with HT
1GB DDR2 RAM
256MB 7600 GT
Windows XP Home SP2
Note that when I removed the semicolon from the S_T_M line, the direct3D error stopped coming up, regardless of what drivers I had installed, but the black screen remained.

Thats strange. Don't u get any error message ?

Nope, the screen just turns black and I have to Alt-Tab out and close the program.

I've reinstalled, messed around with different drivers, tried it on game version 1.07 instead of 1.18, and even installed my friend's copy of the game to see if it works.
Nothing, the same damn problem persists.
I've beaten SS2 and Thief: TDP on this computer and got both of them to run with relative ease. Why must Thief 2 be so problematic :(?
I had my heart set on playing this game and the Shadows of the Metal Age unofficial expansion.
Does anyone know of ANYTHING I could try?
UPDATE:
I was just browsing these forums to see if there was anything else I could try and I found this topic:

And that fix worked! I have absolutely no idea why changing the name of my thief2.exe system executable to thief2o.exe magically made the game run, but it did. This should be put in the FAQ, it sure saved me.

Interesting. Glad it works, but it has me puzzled. How could the EXE name matter in XP? I wonder if this could be a registry issue. Maybe thief2.exe points to some area of your registry that is corrupt. If you are comfortable with regedit, you might do a search for thief2.exe and see if its entries are valid. Bear in mind that if you are not careful, regedit can destroy your computer's operating system. I have only three registry entries. thief2.exe, same configuration, works for me under XP.
