Along the way down to
the escape tunnel, there's a barred window, through which one can see a corridor with a table, a spilled bottle of wine, and a patrolling guard. Is there any way into this area, or is it just for ambiance?
Yes there is. In the beginning area
take a look at the flower planter just over the ledge behind the guy watering flowers in the same area. There is a switch you can press that will lower it and let you into the area with the guard and wine bottle.

Is anyone willing to tell me how to get another ending? 2 of 8 endings and 0 of 13 secets is quite disappointing but I need a bit more motivation to start the mission again.

This might have worked better with two threads - one for each level - but no matter.
@Zontik: 1. Not sure we are talking about the same place. I can climb much higher because there is a vine so why a crate? (and I've not seen a crate anywhere. Nor have I seen a lever. I guess you mean I can climb the vine and spot a lever through the window? But I can't shoot an arrow from a vine so have to go and get a crate? But where? I've been all round as far as I can.
2. "Backdoor has a keyhole" but I've not seen a backdoor. I've seen the front door and the west door - both dummies. Are you saying the west door is the back door? And it does not highlight but it has a lock I can use the key on?
So, you have spent 4 years plotting your revenge for Night Watch? ;) Haha - serves me right.

Hi everyone! I just registered here now because I love thief, and on the Eidos forums they said to ask my question here:
"I'm in thegreenly lit cave with the drooling bear face on the ceiling
and I have no clue where to go. All the exits loop to the entrance, the center, or the tunnels. I've shot all my arrows at the bear face as well. It gargles and roars when I stand directly in the drip and look up at it."

I was playing on the lowest difficulty and I assume you mean mission 1, but at that point I do believe you grab a rope arrow in the corner and climb back up the two vines to shoot it into the tree to proceed forward over the large rock.
Also a note for the mission author:
I was playing on windows vista 64 bit and did not have problems with the 'appearance' that happens early in mission 1. I turned on fog to take screenshots (it had been off my first time through due to it being wonky on Vista64) and once I turned fog on I encountered the glitch where it did not disappear and was blackjackable. It seems (In my case at least) that fog has a direct effect on this glitch happening. Just thought you'd like to know.

Zontik, this is absolutely magnificent!
The architectural attention to detail is simply staggering. I've more than once idly wondered what Neuschwanstein would be like in the Dark Engine, and it's blown my mind to see that you've managed to make it happen. This a feat of another order, and I'm equally awed by the fact that you stuck with it for four years. All the love and care that went into this construction is very apparent.
The story of the mission is also quite fun, but I'm right now mostly amazed by the design of this place. It's one thing to put together a nice story (and what a nice story it is!), but it's another to recreate in exacting detail and full scale one of the most gorgeous castles in the world.
Excellent work. Cheers to you!:D

OK, semi-ghosted (1 water arrow used, no alerts apart from the werewolf scene) Part 1 on Largo in 1 hour 46m.
Feedback:
Frustrations: Only the look, reputation, and promise of this FM would motivate some to continue (including me!) Many would have abandoned it if it had looked poor or unpromising.
Some difficult mantling throughout that might not suit many players; they might not even feel able to continue.
The sword/tree looked great but needed a strong clue because it was mission critical. Maybe a woodman's hutsomewhere with an axe or saw and a note that "the tree was rotten and dangerous and easy to cut down." If it had been a side quest then no problem.
The lever is totally invisible on normal brightness setting. I had to boost gamma to the max to see it only after I was told it was there. If anyone could see that normally then I suggest they have their gamma too high. I calibrate my gamma using the start of Thief 2 where the dark area textures should be just visible. Inside the lever window it looked almost black. Further, the window looks easily big enough to climb in so is bound to frustrate anyone trying. If I could have seen the lever early then I would have guessed what to do.
I had to use what I assume is a bug: it is possible to shoot an arrow from a ladder if you keep moving about and find a certain spot. This can take many minutes but it is possible. Maybe this is common knowledge to Thief players. If there is anything else to climb on like a crate, then I never found it, nor do I think one would be high enough; more like 3 or 4.
It seems impossible to pick a complex lock in bright sunlight in the scan of two cameras that trigger in 2 or 3 seconds.
I hit the lever again in the hope that the portcullis would slowly descend and I could slip under it and hide between it and the door and, though trapped, be free to pick the lock. That would have been cool. But the lever did not respond to repeated hits. It occurred to me if I had thought of it maybe I could have slipped under it the first time and picked the lock before the portcullis had ascended.
I used another bug where if you deliberately reveal yourself to one camera until it first targets you then move around the side out of sight, it will follow you until it is twisted around facing the back of its niche where it gets stuck (it may recover I think.) You can then crouch under the other one. Maybe this is also common knowledge to Thief players.
I had the backdoor key but I never did find the backdoor.
Very little in the way of clues. I found one which could easily have been missed though I don't recall it being very helpful.
Apart from the above, gameplay was OK and music and visuals excellent. :thumb: In particular, the first view of the castle and the surroundings takes your breath away. (and I've been playing Dark Mod for the last few years!) One technical bug here - it crashed when I first saw it and I had to use Task Manager to break out. On reloading from a quicksave right at the start just after the music started it was OK but that music had gone, never to return which was a pity.
Oh, one other technical bug was the werewolf camvator cutscene I got jammed halfway against a ceiling and had to use Task Manager to crash out. I wondered if it was because I was crouching just before so I tried again this time standing and it was OK.
I look forward to Part 2 but with trepidation. ;) :)
If this thread had been two, one for each level then I'd have been interested to read through to see what I missed. Maybe later.

If you had that many thoughts about mission 1, I look forward to seeing your thoughts on mission 2 :laff:

But I think at least some will be pleased by the exactly same feature. Mountaineering isn't easy, so it was a bit closer to reality this way ;) Not all FMs should be tailored for everyone and their grandma, otherwise they could be boring for 'veterans'. It's like with films etc.

Hmm,
the lever was perfectly visible for me, and I play with my usual gamma on CRT which is dark by most standards. Perhaps it's your monitor?
About the shooting from the ladder (or was it vine?) I don't think that was a bug, I did exactly the same.

It's definitely the intended way to pick the lock ;) And the camera doesn't stuck,
it rotates, but quite slow to give player enough time.Quote:

The backdoor is the door on the opposite side of the castle (the unfrobable door),
and it has a small hole for the key :) However, when I used the key, the door didn't open but instead the alarm was initiated. I think that way is intended for easier difficulties only.Quote:

...you have to put the can can book into the book holder place. After this the bars to the attic on the highest floor should open. I have done this but
the attic is not open. At least, I am assuming that what I think it the attic is, in fact, the attic. At the top of the stairs there is a short hallway with a ladder laying on the floor. In the stairwell itself there is a grate high up on the wall. If this is indeed the attic, neither the door nor the grate will open. The grate doesn't even highlight. Am I in the wrong place?
