Thief 2- CTD problem - have tried many fixes

Hi, I am trying to launch Thief 2 but I can't even make it to the main menu. It tries to launch, goes black for about 3 secs and then just gives up and crashes to desktop.

Ive recently changed graphics cards and upgraded to a GE Force GT 220 with 1 mb of ram so I suspect that this is the issue, but there has to be a solution.

I have read the FAQ and tried everything under the sun to fix this but nothing helps.

Taffer Patcher - tried
Image Cfg fix for dual core - manually tried - no result
Ran the .exe in different Compatibility modes - no joy.

I don't know what else to do except maybe wind back the drivers to an earlier version, but I don't want to mess with that unless i really have to and wouldn't have a clue which version to pick or where to DL from.

Any advice would be very welcome for this weary, weary taffer.:confused:

OK, I now have some specific error information to give you all. I hope this helps to make sense of things a bit more.

umxsbxw.dll is not a part of Thief or Windows. Seems related to UmxAgent.exe — what kind of application is this? If it's an anti-virus or a firewall, it's better to put Thief folder in application's exclusion list if it has such feature or disable it temporarily if it hasn't.

Same problem was seen here (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2012412) last year so it's almost certainly the culprit ((http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=umxsbxw.dll+game+crash) google also backs this up). One result suggested that the problem may have been when switching from another anti-virus / firewall software to CA without doing a full uninstall.

Personally, I'd uninstall (not just disable) the CA firewall software and enable Windows firewall instead.

Having overcome this hurdle, however, the chanpagne's not quite ready yet.

I now have a new challenge on my hands relating to the graphics. After launch and the intro movie I get to the menu screen and it's completly black. I have installed DDfix, both manually and through Taffer Patcher (which I noted does not acutually patch the .exe as intended) but i still have the same graphics problem. Perhaps i need to change the parameters inside ddfix, but I'm unsure which ones to touch and would appreciate further advice on this.

P.S. I have double checked and the dual core fix is applied. I also used FlipBit as well on the .exe through the shell extension, just in case, but no joy.

OK, a positive update to my woes. Well, more than that - the problem has been resolved.

I d'loaded a pre-patched .exe this time from the (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=121449&highlight=ddfix) DDfix thread and it worked right off the bat !!:D

I must have patched it incorrectly.

Especially the later versions of ddfix do quite a bit of memory patching and caller detection, and all of it has been tested only with the prepatched exe.
