thief 2 crashes instantly, suspecting it to be a fault of cam.cfg... - by Albert

I tried a few things: starting the game thru compatability. nope
uninstalled the brilliant t2x. nope
I checked the cam.cfg file, and to my horror, this is the only line, a few space down:
skip_starting_checks
..............................................................................................
What does this mean?! (minus the ...'s)

Well, this is a correct version of the cam.cfg file that I keep on my ubuntu system in hopes that one day
I'll be able to run the game on this system...
But, what do you guys think caused the problem?

I got no idea, but thanks! I had the same problem, my copy of T2 crashed instantly as well. T1 works perfectly, so I was very confused. I copypasted your good cam.cfg, and now T2 works like a charm.
I didn't have just one line though, but after the line "movie_volume_factor 0.7", I got "skip_starting_checks" and after that it was blank.
EDIT: Now I'm getting some other weird problem though (sorry for stealing the topic, but I hope that the problem lies in here somewhere). Whenever a movie starts playing in T2, the game stops responding and crashes. Couldn't find anything about it in the FAQs, since this only affects T2 and not T1.

Heh, it happened to me again! lol :p
Oh well, back to the drawing board. Someone should at least sticky this post while a solution is being found.

Albert, I have found thief has a habit of killing itself for no reason, so I suggest you backup any save games and then delete the thief directory and then reinstall thief fresh, then install all the require patches, then install ddfix and then the widescreen patch.....
than once you have done all that and thief works as it should make a zip of the thief folder so you wont have to do that again.
