Thief 2 - Crash after intro movie - XP SP3 w/ ddfix etc. - by Nox Deleo

Hi guys. First off just a quick thanks to all the people who've worked so hard to get these classics running for people again, and it's nice to see there's so many people still playing these games.
My problem is a straightforward crash to windows error reporting after the end of the intro movie (i.e. when the main menu is supposed to load). I'll list my spec below, but i'm trying to run the original (2cd from "back in the day") Thief 2, having successfully got the original Thief Gold running a few days ago.
My spec (since there's no attachments, no dxdiag.txt, so please forgive me if I miss anything crucial):
Windows XP Pro SP3
ASUS Maximus Formula Motherboard
Intel Q6850 @ 3.00GHz
4GB OCZ DDR2 RAM
XFX GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB running the latest driver (196.21 WHQL) running 2 displays at 1920x1080 (main) and 1600x1200 (secondary)
Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Extreme Gamer
Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 (in case it's relevant)
Now, things i've tried so far:
* In case it's relevant, for both games I had to install in safe mode just to get the installer to actually run properly.
* Patched up to 1.18 with the special patch to fix that annoying "CD not in drive" error.
* Installed Indeo Codecs for XP (5.2)...intro movie runs fine so i'm assuming this isn't a problem.
* Implemented DDFix v1.3.11b on pre-patched exe @1920x1080 with MultiCoreFix = 1 and VideoFix = 1.
* Widescreen hack after DDFix.
* Enabled the "safe_texture_manager" in USER.CFG.
* Win 98/ME and Win 2000 compatibility modes.
* Also tried rolling back to another recentish graphics driver (195.62), not that I expected that to fix it.
* Read every related thread I could find for the best part of a day.
Error reporting summary:
AppName: thief2.exe AppVer: 1.9.0.0 ModName: thief2.exe
ModVer: 1.9.0.0 Offset: 0012ff72
I'm wondering if my graphics drivers are simply too new and (dare I say it) ahead of DDFix, since it seems to be the magic fix for others experiencing my problem. Hoping someone involved with DDFix can answer that one. One last thing: i'm reluctant to do Thief 2 reinstalls or graphics driver rollbacks until i've exhausted all other suggestions, simply because of the amount of trouble they've been giving me. Thief 2 reinstalls need safe mode, which for some reason is now causing trouble with the userprofile variable on my XP (don't ask). As for the drivers, not only do the installations have a habit of breaking mid-way through (despite ample precautions), but i'd like not to roll-back too far as I also play new titles online with friends. Sorry to be a pain.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions (however outlandish they may be) - i'm willing to try just about anything right now since Thief 1 has got me in that strange obsessive mood.

Try setting it up so you have to have the cd in the drive. That "fix" screwed me up and caused problems for me with TMA.
I also have to use XP compatibilty rather than ME.
I just reloaded on a Windows 7 laptop last night and had no trouble.
I used SiO2's (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=125485&p=1951806&viewfull=1#post1951806) fog fixed DDFix , then weaklings wide screen patch, ran as administrator, set compatibilty to XP sp2 and it all worked fine.
I then tried that other fix and almost the same thing that happened to you happened to me, except I just hung on a black screen, I removed it and everything works fine
Edit - Just seen you are using XP, maybe try without compatibility?

Thanks for that. Any idea how i'd go about doing that? I tried all sorts of methods from forums all over, had a physical disc in, an imaged copy mounted using DAEMON Tools, and it would still complain that there was no disc in the drive. The patch seemed to be the only thing that actually worked.

Great. Thanks for the update. I'll give that a go (probably tomorrow...getting this up and running is a good use of a week off...right? :D). Just noticed that DDFix link is down (seems to have been all day as I looked at getting it this morning). Any chance you could email it over to me? Thanks again.

SiO2's ddfix on its way.

It works! Namdrol you genius!
Method:
- Installed Indeo for XP 1.2 under safe mode.
- Installed original 2cd T2 under safe mode.
- Patched to 1.18 using regular Looking Glass patch (which no longer caused CD troubles).
- Had to install ddfix 1.4.4b using a pre-patched exe (oddly enough my 1.18 patched exe was 244KB as opposed to the ~2.5MB it should have been, and contained no reference to DDRAW.DLL).
- Installed DarkWidescreen patch...and voila, it runs (with no compatibility mode, and didn't even need safe_texture_manager)!
Big thanks to Timeslip, SiO2, and especially Namdrol for putting me on the right track! Now, time to enjoy the awesomeness that is Thief 2.
