The problem lies in that Thief 2 has copy protection applied to the exe, and so it is impossible to play without the disk unless you use a no cd patch.
Although what voodoo47 suggests could work, because you're telling the game to look for the CD as the hard drive rather than a real CD rom drive.
(I have to say though, does that really work? I thought thief 2 would still ask regardless of what you do to the cfg file?)

anyway, here is my darkinst.cfg, just for reference (it should work for any t2 install in any location, but you may need to delete the cd_path line completely):
Code:
cd_path .\
install_path .\
language english
resname_base .\EP+.\res
load_path .\+.\
script_module_path .\+.\
movie_path .\movies+\.movies
Waitaminute... so you've just got a bunch of undefined paths and that gets the job done? That really works?? Forgive me if that's a stupid question, I'm not much of a code monkey.
And tafferpatch WON'T let me play w/o the disk, am I hearing you right? I've still got to mess with the darkinst.cfg, right?

Hot damn! Un/reinstalled the game NOT in the Program Files folder, and then ran tafferpatch (it REALLY doesn't like the Mastertronic DVD, BTW -- it couldn't find the install folder) -- and then all I had to do was remove the cdpath line from my darkinst.cfg, and viola! Thief 2 up and running without the external DVD hooked up. Thank you all, (ladies and) gentlemen! :D

I thought for sure thief 2 would not run no matter what you did to the darkinst.cfg. Guess I was wrong.
And to answer your question (even though it doesn't matter at this point), tafferpatcher won't circumvent copy protection if I understand correctly - in other words, yes you still need the CD.

tafferpatcher installs ddfix, and that gets rid of most cd not found issues.however,it seems like some people need to remove that cd_path line as well-not sure what causes this.

ddfix does not remove copy protection (cd check.) There are not any patches ( at least not readily allowed on these forums for legal reasons) that remove copy protection to my knowledge.
Oh wait, you simply meant it removes error messages when the CD is in the drive and you still get the missing cd message for example, right?
