Thank You : )
It works!
Because T2 is out of print, I worry about the disk leaving the house. At some point I should get another copy from Ebay.
I had to resurface my game disk once already.

Out of print? Not by a long shot. :) There is still a company or two that prints discount copies of it. Just comes in a jewel case, no boxes or instruction manuals. I bought mine for under $4 Canadian.

I'm in England and yesterday I bought a DVD copy of TDP and TMA for £5 on Amazon.co.uk. Works perfectly straight out of the box too. TDP seems to think it's version 1.33 if that means anything good.

Hello there.
I've got a question about performance. There is a bunch of new T2 FMs that use high resolution textures and weather effects like dense rain drops, rain water falling down the gutter, snow falling from the skies, smoke or even hq sounds and music, ie. CoSaS, ANiR. These FMs are simply unplayable on my EEE PC 1000H with 2GB of memory. They lag terribly (1 FPS and sometimes less!!!). So the question is: is it possible to tweak Intel GMA 945 graphic card or the game somehow so such HQ FMs would be at least playable (sometimes lowering view to the floor helps avoid lags but not always and playing that way is so freaking frustrating). Oh, and turning off weather and sky high resolution effects in T2 options in 99% FM cases does NOT help at all.
Cheers.

You could install using a external CD drive, or you could (theoretically) install to a large thumb drive using a desktop PC and then copy the installation over and edit the DARKINST.CFG so Thief knows where all the files are-- hell, you could probably keep it on the thumbdrive and have a portable Thief2 installation!
anyway:
I did a full Thief2 install to my external HD (I:\) and edited my DARKINST.CFG as shown below:
cd_path i:\
install_path I:\Thief2
language english
resname_base I:\Thief2\res+i:\thief2
load_path I:\Thief2
script_module_path I:\Thief2
movie_path I:\Thief2\movies
As well, I had to put a file named SND.CRF in the Thief2 directory so that the check for a CD under the cd_path path comes back positive. It doesn't have to be the actual file, just an empty ZIP renamed to CRF.
After all that, it worked fine, Darkloader didn't complain, and it didn't ask for a CD all the time. Good luck!
I didn't know this... I thought you needed a [insert words I'm thinking of here] to make thief 2 work without the cd.

You're half right ©
If you have original 260kB starter thief2.exe and 2.5Mb encrypted thief2.icd file, that won't work. But the exe from Premier Patch will do. Also there were plenty of official releases without CD protection, where cd_path string may be redirected to install folder or simply commented out by a semicolon.

I see.
I've got the original trapezoid box release w/ copy protection

This thread is exactly what I've been looking for. I seem to be running into some difficulty, however, in making Thief 2 run w/o the disk in the drive. I'm running a Lenovo X200 on Win7 x64 -- it has no optical drive, and much like the EeePC above, it's a hassle to drag out the external DVD drive any time I want to get my sneak on. I do, BTW, have a legal copy of the game -- it's the Mastertronic version that has all 3 games on a single disc.
OK, so following the instructions above, I've edited my DARKINST.CFG to look like the following:
cd_path C:\Program Files (x86)
install_path C:\Program Files (x86)\Thief2
language english
resname_base C:\Program Files (x86)\Thief2\res+C:\Program Files (x86)\Thief2
load_path C:\Program Files (x86)\Thief2+C:\Program Files (x86)\Thief2
script_module_path C:\Program Files (x86)\Thief2+C:\Program Files (x86)\Thief2
movie_path C:\Program Files (x86)\Thief2\movies+C:\Program Files (x86)\Thief2\movies
I also created an empty SND.CRF file out of an empty zip and inserted it into the main folder as per instructions. Unexpectedly, there was already a file named SND.CRF in the folder, and when I opened it in Notepad it was a jumble of symbols and characters. I renamed it .old and moved the empty file into the folder. Despite these steps, I still get a prompt to insert the disc when starting Thief 2. Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?
I also attempted altering the cd path line to read "cd_path C:\Program Files (x86)\Thief2" in the hopes that might do something... but still no dice.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! :thumb:

first, installing thief to program files (or any other protected location),is a very bad idea-you should pick something safe, like C:\games\thief2 or similar.
I would suggest you try (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131106) tafferpatcher,it should make you install quite painless.
anyway, here is my darkinst.cfg, just for reference (it should work for any t2 install in any location, but you may need to delete the cd_path line completely):
Code:
cd_path .\
install_path .\
language english
resname_base .\EP+.\res
load_path .\+.\
script_module_path .\+.\
movie_path .\movies+\.movies
