Has anyone got an eeePC and managed to put Thief 2 on it???
Just wondering how it could be done as I would like to put Thief 2 on mine...I imagine the CD checking would need to be circumvented also as the eeePC has no CD drive..

You could install using a external CD drive, or you could (theoretically) install to a large thumb drive using a desktop PC and then copy the installation over and edit the DARKINST.CFG so Thief knows where all the files are-- hell, you could probably keep it on the thumbdrive and have a portable Thief2 installation!
anyway:
I did a full Thief2 install to my external HD (I:\) and edited my DARKINST.CFG as shown below:
cd_path i:\
install_path I:\Thief2
language english
resname_base I:\Thief2\res+i:\thief2
load_path I:\Thief2
script_module_path I:\Thief2
movie_path I:\Thief2\movies
As well, I had to put a file named SND.CRF in the Thief2 directory so that the check for a CD under the cd_path path comes back positive. It doesn't have to be the actual file, just an empty ZIP renamed to CRF.
After all that, it worked fine, Darkloader didn't complain, and it didn't ask for a CD all the time. Good luck!

What?!?!
Are you saying that I no longer need a *hush* NO-CD .exe in order to play Thief 2 without the CD? (purely for CD preservation purposes, of course! I own legally all three Thief games, but I don't want to use the CD's if I can help it) This sounds like a really great thing indeed! I'm going to have to try this out.
If it really does work without any sort of cracked .exe, it should be added to the FAQ along with the Thief 1 method - a simple edit of the config file, and a blank file named sound.crf in the right folder doesn't constitute breaking anything in the EULA that I can see... or any other sort of laws that would get ttlg or any individuals in any sort of legal trouble at all, either.

Eula probably has something vague that tricking the game into working without a cd would be encompassed in. Legal documents are specific about what they exclude, not the other way around.

Yeehaw!
It works perfectly. No messing around with dubious No-CD patches...
All I did was create an empty zip file, named snd.crf and placed it in the same folder as the thief2.exe file (main install folder)
I replaced the various references to e:\ (my cd drive) with the install folder
e.g.
I had installed to C:\games\thief\thief2, so I put C:\games\thief\ as the cd_path entry (it must be one "up" from the thief install folder)
Works like a charm! - Thanks a bunch!

I can provide a definite answer to this, at last.
You'll need to have (
http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=18260) AsTray Plus installed and running for Thief 2 to play nice. What this program does is make a 640x480 resolution available to games when they load, which a whole bunch of older games (including the Thief games, System Shock 2, Fallout, Diablo, etc) need in order to load up. AsTray Plus is easily installed as either a replacement or alternative to the default Asus resolution-switching tray program.
With that running, Thief Gold, Thief 2 and System Shock 2 all run fine on my EeePC under XP. To install them, you can share a disc drive from another PC, and map it as a network drive on the EeePC. I'm using an SDHC card for the extra harddrive space myself, they slot into the EeePC's card reader neatly without sticking out like a usb drive and go up to 8 and 16gb capacities without being too expensive.

I got a question. If I want to run Thief in WINE will my resolution be OK? I can't use Astray since it's Windows only and I want to run it in Linux. Thief does support 800x480, resolutions, correct?

after you have installed thief you can then also obtain a no-cd patch so you dont have to keep digging out the CD+external drive.. or Pm and I`ll send you mine, which has also been dualcore and ddfix patched.

I'm not sure what to change. I have a legal copy of T2 as well. I have a laptop and I am always leaving the disk in there.
cd_path d:\
install_path C:\Program Files\Thief 2
language english
resname_base .\EP+C:\Program Files\Thief 2\res+d:\thief2
load_path C:\Program Files\Thief 2+d:\thief2
script_module_path C:\Program Files\Thief 2+d:\thief2
movie_path C:\Program Files\Thief 2\movies+d:\thief2\movies

Make it look like this. You have to do a FULL install when you install the game though.
install_path C:\Program Files\Thief 2
language english
resname_base .\EP+C:\Program Files\Thief 2\res
load_path C:\Program Files\Thief 2
script_module_path C:\Program Files\Thief 2
movie_path C:\Program Files\Thief 2\movies
