I've tried to run Thief 2, an older copy which has DirectX7 as a supplemental install, only to find that it doesn't recognize DirectX10 and gives me an error telling me I have to install DirectX7 in order to play the game.
Has anyone else come across this problem, and if so, how did they fix it. I'm afraid to install DirectX7, then have it conflict with DirectX10, or worse, take over from DirectX10.

Well, you can't install DirectX 7 while DirectX 10 is installed, and it won't let you uninstall it. It will only allow newer versions, never older versions. I believe there are fixes, but I can't help you with that.
What Operating System are you running on? I can't remember if you need to be logged in as Administrator for this.
I just posted to give you SOME feedback, but really, tell us your system specs.

Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit DirerctX 10.0
Nvidia GeForce8800GT ver 182.08
Intel Core2 CPU 6700@2.66 Hz 2.66 GHz
4 GB DDR2 RAM
I'm logged in as administrator.
I've been in communication with LarryG and he's guided me through the imagecfg & DDFIX. But I got stuck when trying to run Thief in order to check if the "fixes" worked. He never experienced that issue, probably because his copy of Thief 2 is recent and theoretically Vista compatible, meaning, I hope, that it uses DirectX 10. I've been trying to buy a similar version of Thief 2, but I live in Canada, and the stores I've encountered that have that to sell, don't deliver outside the states.
So I need to solve the DirectX 7 imperative that I'm confronted with when I try to run Thief 2.
It looks like this problem is unigue to Thief 2. Thief Gold and Deadly Shadows seem to be behaving themselves.

Thank you Nameless Voice. That sounds right to me. I usually do these things one step at a time and it would be just like me to try to prematurely run something before it's ready.
Yes, that was the error I was getting.

He's already using DDFix and the problem has already been resolved, no need to install anything.

Thank you again Nameless Voice, and thank you EvaUnit02 for your input.
The DirectX 7 issue is indeed solved.

I think it should be noted that ddfix gui version does not work in Vista64. Any chance for support in the future? (not sure the author of the program hangs around..)
