I made some separate installs of T2 and upgraded the patches to 1.23 and 1.24. The Problem is, when I play FMs with FMsel, T2 continuously exits to the desktop. Also, applications such as Internet Explorer or Skype start when they shouldn't - I'm mainly using the left-hand keyboard buttons to move around. By choice, HD Mod is not installed, but I installed the game with Tafferpatcher 1.23 because the game won't install even with -lgntforce, run as administrator, or compatibility settings. I installed them with all of the upgrade features except for the water enhancement pack. I've changed the in-game screen resolution to match my monitor's - 1600 x 900. I use Windows 7 64-bit on a Sony VAIO gaming laptop, circa 2010. I have enough memory and CPU power, but if anyone has experienced this it would be great to know what is happening.
On my laptop, this did not occur with T2 1.21. I tried T2 1.22 with HD Mod previously, but I prefer the game sans HD because it runs more efficiently on my computer.

What does that mean? The game quits, it's minimized?
Check the skype bindings or disable skype for the time being. I bet there's shared bindings with thief.

A problem seems to have started with FMSel. Try opening cam_mod.ini and adding the line no_unload_fmsel

no_unload_fmselI tried this and it still minimizes to the desktop (IE and/or Skype don't always start when this happens). Could anything else be causing this?

I don't think that's the case, because if I play with T2 1.21, it doesn't minimize, and IE or Skype do not start. All I've use in T2 1.24 for in-game testing are the left hand directional keys and my mouse.

I started Keeper of Infinity 2 with v1.24 yesterday and the game did not minimize. But from what I remember I played Rust Belt Prison - NewDark with v1.24 and it did minimize to the desktop. I guess I'll keep playing it and see what missions work - the very new FMs - or until I find a fix for backwards compatibility.
