I am not out of the woods yet. Last night I had another system hiccup. I noticed that the "Browse" button on an internet forum website (for uploading a file) failed to work. I went back and attempted to resume the paused Thief 2, and it failed in the same fashion - had to kill the task. A shutdown and cold start seems to have fixed the problem for the time being. Both the Browse and Thief resumes are working. This thing is like a time bomb, making me nervous.
I have a support e-mail in to Creative, who have been unresponsive to date.

The system has been stable now for five days. Creative responded and had a few words of wisdom about drivers such as chipset drivers, BIOS software, and one thing that rang a bell. They mentioned that if my video card supported High Definition Audio, I should disable HDMI on the card. I am not sure about HDMI, but in fact I did deinstall the Nvidia HD Audio drivers. Maybe that has something to do with the good behavior now. I have a host of things to try if it ever acts up again, but for now, if it ain't broke I won't fix it.
