Thief 1/2 & SShock 2: DDFix and Enhanced Resolution Patch - discussion - by bikerdude

I set vsync to application controlled and refresh rate to 75 Hz. Works fine on my CRT. I've had similar good results with ATI 1950 Pro and several Nvidia cards. If you turn vsync off, say to get better benchmarks, Thief will run too fast.

No, for the reasons stated in that thread.
But wouldn't it be possible to render to an intermediate target with a 4:3 ratio (say 1280x960), as Dark insists, then crop and copy to a primary surface with an equal horizontal resolution and a 16:9 ratio (say 1280x720)?

I always thought that the whole point of widescreen is to see more, not less.

What about (

this close.

The final command (set_3d_zoom 0.83) was only there so that the view angle was increased, so that after cropping, the vertical view angle would be the same as the original view angle, and the horizontal view angle would show more (which is one of the much touted features of widescreen).
That way, you actually would be getting more, rather than less, you'd be adding to the sides rather than taking away from the top and bottom. It's not really necessary, just an aesthetic touch.

Reread that thread. :p
set_3d_zoom is a dromed command. There's no equivelent in thief 2 itself.
Edit: Actually, that doesn't seem to be mentioned in that thread. I remember some part of the instructions only working in dromed, and a search for an equivilent in thief not turning up anything, and I'm pretty sure it was the set_3d_zoom command... :erg:

set_3d_zoom is not a Dromed command, it's a console command that works only when the game is started by Dromed. Anyways I'm pretty confident that we can figure out that detail if ddfix can do the 4:3 -> 16:9 cropping.

That's what I meant. afaik, when 'the game is started by dromed', it's not launching thief2.exe. It's still part of dromed, and the renderer has some features that aren't in thief. (i.e. Search the dromed exe for the string set_3d_zoom and you will find it. Do the same search in thief2.exe and it's nowhere to be found.)

The cropping is trivial, and is something I could add in 5 mins if you didn't mind breaking gamma, vsync, loosing the health bar/light gem from the bottom of the screen as well as all the text from the top and not being able to see the top and bottom of menu screens and movies. :p
You can move the bits of ui around as shown in the other thread, and I could disable cropping when not in game easily enough, but you'd still loose a part of the picture in game and there would be gamma/vsync issues. Since thief has no built in way to change the zoom (Edit: actually the bow can zoom, so it must do. There's no easy way to find the code that handles that though...) it would be just as easy to change the aspect ratio as the fov, and that would have the advantage that you wouldn't have to worry about all the side effects from cropping.
I'm busy with uni writting up my dissertation atm, so like I said before I wont be able to do any more work here for the next month or so. I already had a quick look for the code in thief that handles the vertex transformation from world space to screen space before getting wrapped up in RL, but I couldn't find it. I'll take another look when I get my free time back, but don't hold your breath.

Hello to everyone! There is problem with Thief Gold when I use DDfix, game succesfully starts but the screen is black and I can see only my lifebar and hear sounds. I will appreciate if someone can help me. Thank you in advance. And there is problem with SS2 too when applying DDfix and starting the game it crashes after starting new game. So generally this fix helps me only with Thief 2, but with the others fails.

Silly question, but I've just procured a copy of The Dark Project fir myself, as I've only ever played Gold. Does DDfix work on the original Thief? In my case this is the "Platinum" edition.

yes, yes it does
